Trial Motion Deadline Approaching in Veit Case

Former Des Plaines cop Timothy Veit is charged with falsifying records in order to get grant funding for overtime pay.

  No trial motions have been filed in the case against former Des Plaines police officer Timothy Veit, the Journal & Topics reports. The deadline to file a motion in the case is May 21. Veit has been charged with falsifying records in order to get grant funding for overtime pay. Veit was accused of inflating the number of DUI arrests that would qualify for the federal funds from 30 to 152, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, between 2009 and 2012. Thirteen other police officers have been suspended following an investigation into the issue. Veit’s next court date is set for June 4, although he does not have to be at the status hearing himself, the newspaper reports.

Des Plaines Police Chief William Kushner said a former police commander told officers reporting information for a federally funded traffic enforcement campaign was OK when it was not.

A former Des Plaines police commander told police officers reporting overtime hours for a federally funded traffic enforcement program was OK when it was not, said Police Chief William Kushner. In a public statement on Tuesday, the city announced 13 Des Plaines police officers would be suspended for varying lengths of time following an investigation into information reported to the Illinois Department of Transportation to qualify for grant funding. The Illinois Department of Transportation suspended funding of the traffic safety grant in August 2012, pending an investigation into data about DUI arrests that may have been fraudulent. A former Des Plaines police commander accused of making false statements in connection with a federal traffic enforcement program appears to be singled out by federal prosecutors, said his defense attorney.

The defense attorney for a former Des Plaines police commander accused of falsifying federal grant records for financial gain said his client was possibly being unfairly singled out by federal prosecutors. Timothy Veit, 55, of Mount Prospect, a 31-year law enforcement veteran, pled not guilty in federal court Feb. 27 on charges of making false statements. Veit is accused of inflating the number of arrests for driving under the influence that would qualify for federal funds in a traffic enforcement program from 30 to 152, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, between 2009 and 2012. Former Des Plaines Police Commander Pleads Not Guilty

Timothy Veit, 55, of Mount Prospect pleaded not guilty on charges of making false statements in federal court on Wednesday.

A former Des Plaines police commander accused of falsifying records for financial gain pled not guilty in federal court on Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Timothy Veit, 55, of Mount Prospect, a 31-year law enforcement veteran, was charged with was charged with one felony count of making false statements, the U.S. Attorney’s Office stated. Veit pled not guilty and was arraigned before U.S. District Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan in federal court in Chicago on Wednesday, said Randall Samborn, spokesperson at the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Police Chief William Kushner said he was working on crafting a new department policy that would ensure irregularities in reporting data recently uncovered in an investigation into grant funding do not occur again.

While a former Des Plaines police commander faces charges that accuse him of falsifying records provided for a federally-funded grant, plans are underway for a new department policy that will ensure such irregularities will not occur again, said Police Chief William Kushner.
