In a public statement on Tuesday, the city announced 13 Des Plaines police officers would be suspended for varying lengths of time following an investigation into information reported to the Illinois Department of Transportation to qualify for grant funding. A former Des Plaines police commander accused of making false statements in connection with a federal traffic enforcement program appears to be singled out by federal prosecutors, said his defense attorney.
The defense attorney for a former Des Plaines police commander accused of falsifying federal grant records for financial gain said his client was possibly being unfairly singled out by federal prosecutors. Timothy Veit, 55, of Mount Prospect, a 31-year law enforcement veteran, pled not guilty in federal court Feb. 27 on charges of making false statements. Veit is accused of inflating the number of arrests for driving under the influence that would qualify for federal funds in a traffic enforcement program from 30 to 152, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, between 2009 and 2012. A former Des Plaines police commander accused of falsifying records for financial gain pled not guilty in federal court on Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Timothy Veit, 55, of Mount Prospect, a 31-year law enforcement veteran, was charged with was charged with one felony count of making false statements, the U.S. Attorney’s Office stated. Veit pled not guilty and was arraigned before U.S. District Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan in federal court in Chicago on Wednesday, said Randall Samborn, spokesperson at the U.S. Attorney’s Office. An investigation into DUI arrests follows a complaint about fraudulent data, the Daily Herald reported.
The Illinois Department of Transportation has suspended funding for a traffic safety grant to Des Plaines, pending an investigation into data about DUI arrests that may have been fraudulent, the Daily Herald reported. Former Des Plaines police Commander Tim Veit approved the documents submitted for the grant money. Veit retired in April after more than 30 years in law enforcement. Who's been in charge of this town for the last 4 years? Is it the mayor and his city council? If so, they must be responsible for the police department being in shambles, so many of the legitimate businesses have left town in that time (look at Metropolitan Square, its a ghost town), and there has been no efforts for improving anything (same old crappy Des Plaines Theater, for example).
