This week’s column was submitted Gwen LaCosse, reference assistant at the Des Plaines Public Library. Working in the Reference Department at a public library is a great job. No two days are the same. Moreover, it’s analogous to being a writer—getting paid to learn. In any given day, in any given week, people come up with a myriad of questions. I have a vivid imagination, but sometimes patrons ask things I would not have thought of. Not to give away too many trade secrets, so to speak, but I’d like to mention one patron’s question that has long stayed with me.
