Expanded café, façade construction, a new clock, more in store for the train depot on Miner Street in Des Plaines, according to city documents.
The downtown Des Plaines area will have a new look before the end of the year, and the Metra train depot is included in the comprehensive plan. Des Plaines City Council approved awarding a bid of almost a half-million dollars to remodel the train depot at a meeting on May 6. New doors, windows, an expanded café area, a clock in the center, changes to the façade and more are planned for the Metra depot, according to city documents. The downtown area still revolves around transportation.
The businesses have changed, and a few buildings have disappeared, but downtown's core still is centered on the transportation center, between Pearson and Lee streets. This picture, taken in the mid-1950s, captures a time when angled parking was still allowed on the north side of Miner Street and parallel parking along the south side. There was also a large green space with a colonnade of stately elm trees. Many of the buildings on the north side of the street still look much the same. The Kunisch building was then a currency exchange, now Teresa Tailor. The next building was then Frank's Apparel, and is soon to be home to MBD Martial Arts. City proposes 3 ideas to program that provides federal grant funding.
The City of Des Plaines is likely to receive assistance for one of three projects it proposed to the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), according to Dan Ungerleider, senior planner for the agency's Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program. CMAP received more than 220 applications, which it narrowed down to 62, said Ungerleider. Another call for applications will be made in the fall, he added. Ungerleider noted that CMAP had about 20 projects currently under way. Ungerleider said he met with Des Plaines officials a couple months ago for discussions about the city’s expectations and details of the projects: Work on the project would not be approached until 2012, Ungerleider said.
