‘Readers’ Underscores ‘Us at Our Best’ in Library Art Exhibit

Des Plaines artist shows series of people reading at the Des Plaines Public Library during November.

It is difficult to imagine a more fitting theme for an art exhibition displayed at a library than one currently showing at the Des Plaines Public Library titled Readers. Steven Wagner, local artist and member of the Des Plaines Art Guild, produced 40 paintings in his series, 14 of which are on display at the library throughout November. The images include soldiers reading mail from home, a man proofreading a passport, a woman immersed in fantastic stories, a boy inspired to pick up a book and more. Local Artists' Work Shines At Millennium Bank

Des Plaines bank features local artist at exhibit

If you were to put local artist Kathleen Passi in a room with only a chair and a blank canvas for her to create artwork on, chances are it would be pretty difficult to pull her away from it. The mostly self-taught artist loves to create. Her passion? Scratchboarding.   Scratchboarding is a specially prepared ink-coated board into which an image is etched, revealing a white clay surface underneath. The picture can then be left white, or painted with colored inks. Local Artist Samantha Haring Dishes About Her New Exhibit

Samantha Haring talks about her exhibit, "From Italy With Love," on display at the Des Plaines Public Library.

"Pretty much the first time I held a pencil, I knew that this is what I was going to do for the rest of my life," said Samantha Haring. "There's never been anything else that I've felt this passionate about." Haring, 21, is a local artist whose exhibit, From Italy with Love, is currently on display at the Des Plaines Public Library throughout the month of September. She is a senior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is a member of the Des Plaines Art Guild. She won a scholarship from the guild in 2007 towards her education at the Art Institute and along with it came a free, one-year membership.  She has been an active member since.
