Maine West Jumps to No. 8 in Patch's Basketball Rankings

Week 4: Boys’ and girls’ teams undefeated in CSL North.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks high school basketball teams. All the talk at the start of the girls’ season was about the three-team race for the Central Suburban League South title between Niles West, Maine South and New Trier. Yet, in mid-December, the last remaining undefeated team is Glenbrook South. New Trier still seems to be the team to catch in the CSL on the boys’ side, especially after Glenbrook North fell to Deerfield last week. Maine South jumped to No. 2, the biggest move this week. Meanwhile, Glenbrook North fell to No. 5. Earler: See who was last week's Athlete of the Week. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. Patch’s Basketball Ranking: Week 1

Maine West loses opener against Palatine, drops to No. 11.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. The girls’ season got off to a quick start on Nov. 14 with local teams getting their first games in with holiday tournaments. The boys got their last practices in before opening the year this week, so the movement and analysis in these rankings is only about the girls’ teams. New Trier made its opening statement with win against Phillips, followed by a win on the road at Loyola. Our first five saw no movement as the top teams took care of business and didn’t lose in the opening week. Last week’s rank is in parentheses. Earlier: Last week's preseason basketball ranking. High School Basketball Preview 2011-2012

Last season showcased a lot of solid teams in the North Shore; this year will be just as exciting.

With only Loyola Academy surviving past the second round of the IHSA football playoffs, our attention turns toward the hard wood. The first games for high school girls’ basketball teams start on Nov. 14, and the boys begin a week later on Nov. 21, so this is an opportune time to recap the action from an exciting 2010-2011 season, and preview the upcoming year in hoops. Maine West lost seven seniors from last year's squad that advanced to the regional semifinals and gave Maine South all it could handle in a 45-38 loss at home. Senior Conor Hart, who scored 15 points in the loss, will be looked upon to provide leadership as the Warriors compete for the CSL North crown. Our preseason power rankings will debut next week with a unique format. …

Patch's Football Rankings - Week 8

Maine West lost another tough game, but moved to No. 11 in our latest power rankings.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best football teams. The top three teams, Maine South, Loyola Academy and North Shore Country Day continue to succeed, and none of them were significantly challenged on their way to 7-0 records. Niles North and Niles West high schools were eliminated from playoff contention in week seven, but victories from a handful of teams created a logjam of teams that continue to be on the playoff hot seat. New Trier, Evanston, Deerfield and Highland Park all sit at 4-3 while Glenbrook North is 3-4. All will have at least one opportunity to play against another North Shore playoff contender in the final two weeks. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. Week 8 Rankings: 1. Maine South (1) – …

Warrior Volleyball Shows Fight, But Falls Short Against Spartans

Maine West lost at Glenbrook North 25-16, 25-21 but is showing improvement.

Maine West got off to a forgettable start to the season, but a little bit of lineup tinkering has helped the team play better. Warriors’ coach Randy Tiller shuffled the lineup recently, moving Katie Fitzgerald from outside hitter to middle hitter, and saw better results. The Warriors beat Deerfield and Maine East last week to regain confidence following a 1-15 start to the season. Despite the recent improvements, facing undefeated Central Suburban League North leader Glenbrook North was a tough task for the visiting Warriors. They fell to the Spartans 25-16, 25-21 in Northbrook on Thursday. Earlier: Volleyball team loses to Highland Park. Fitzgerald led Maine West with six kills at GBN. “Our block is improved, our serving is strong,” …
