Maine West Moves Up One Spot to No. 9 in Power Rankings

Patch's latest basketball power rankings.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. Niles West, Loyola and Glenbrook North made waves at early holiday tournaments, but a number of girls teams struggled. All of the area’s boys teams were off, resting and preparing for a full slate of games between Christmas and New Years. New Trier and Glenbrook North will go to the always-tough Proviso West tournament while Glenbrook South and Highland Park will try out the first annual Hinsdale South tournament. For all teams, this is the last batch of non-conference games before the meat of their conference schedules get under way in 2012. EARLIER: See who won Patch's Athlete of the Week. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. WEEK 6 RANKINGS 1. New Trier  (1…

UPDATE: See Who Won Patch's Athlete of the Week

Another hotly contested poll. See who came out on top and won Athlete of the Week!

Almost 600 votes were cast and in the end Deerfield's Michael Alfieri claimed this week’s Athlete of the Week title.  Alfieri was one of the main reasons Deerfield handed CSL North rival Glenbrook North its first loss of the season. The standout sophomore scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assist in the Warriors’ 48-42 victory.  Alfieri captured 264 votes, or 44 percent. The contest literally came down to the wire, with Alfieri and Glenbrook North's Mark Johnson tied with the same amount of votes just hours before Sunday's voting deadline (midnight). To see the results, click here The rest of last week's nominees were: Mark Johnson, senior, basketball forward, Glenbrook North – Johnson had a career-high 28 points …

Patch Football Preseason Rankings

Maine West is looking to shed the consistency of finishing at 2-7 over the past three seasons.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best football teams. While power rankings take season record into consideration, more recent results and news, including known injuries, have a bigger influence than early-season victories or losses. And they are completely and utterly subjective. PRESEASON RANKINGS 1. Maine South – As the three-time defending Class 8A state champions, there are few teams in Illinois, let alone the country, that could match up with the Hawks. QB Matt Alviti returns for his junior season and he’ll have plenty of help in the backfield with senior RB Paul Preston. 2. Loyola Academy – If not for Maine South, we could be talking about the Ramblers as back-to-back state champions. But losses to the …

Boys soccer had its best season in school history while a pair of swimmers earned all-state recognition.

Here are Patch's Top 10 picks for the best moments in Maine West athletics over the past school year. 10. Girls Volleyball Perseveres to Win on Senior Night: Through a tough season, Maine West left one of its better performances for Senior Night. The Warriors rallied for a 23-25, 25-18, 25-20 victory against Maine East, getting their seventh win of the season. 9. Football beats Maine East on their Homecoming: The Warriors got out a 20-0 lead against Maine East on their way to a 26-12 win on the road. Maine West exacted some revenge on its rival after the Blue Demons won on Maine Wet’s Homecoming game last year. 8. Maine West Softball: Maturation of Valles, Warriors Results in Conference Title

Maine West won its first conference championship in three seasons.

Last year Maine West pitcher Ariel Valles felt intimidated. There she was -- only a freshman -- pitching at the varsity level against players three years older than her. The team struggled, finishing with a losing record and fell to New Trier, 9-0, in the regional final.Fast forward one year and a lot has changed. Valles has become one of the Central Suburban League’s best pitchers, going 16-7 with a 1.63 ERA for the Warriors through the first round of the IHSA playoffs.“This year I knew what to expect,” Valles said. “I know last year was that stepping stone up to actually competing a lot with the varsity so I think I knew how to actually play with the older girls.” Coach Mike Murin saw this team had the ability and talent to make 2011 a …

Maine West Sports Roundup: Girls Soccer Gets Rare Playoff Victory

Softball and baseball both won their opening games in the playoffs.

Girls Soccer: Maine West captured its first postseason victory of the year last week. The No. 8 seed Warriors beat No. 9 seed Leyden, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Class 3A Wilmette Regional. UPDATE: Originally reported as the first playoff win in school history, Patch has been informed that last week's victory was not the school's first. Former Maine West soccer coach Roland Hahn said that in 1991, West defeated Lake Park 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs before losing to Hoffman Estates 5-0 in the second round. Although he did not have the archived newspapers, Hahn, who was the head coach from 1987 - 1993 for both the boys and girls soccer teams, noted that the 1989 and 1990 Maine West girls soccer teams might have also won playoff …

Maine West Sports Roundup: Track Teams Head into Postseason

Maine West's Taylor Stephenson captured a conference championship in the 800.

Boys Track: Coach Andy Trotter will tell you that 2011 hasn’t been Maine West’s best season. After graduating three all-conference athletes last year, the Warriors returned no all-conference honorees for the first time in Trotter’s tenure as coach. “We didn’t really know what to expect coming into the season, but for the most part, I thought our top four or five kids have produced and have had decent seasons,” Trotter said. “We don’t have a lot of depth across the board.” But as with all high school sports, the regular season only matters as preparation for the playoffs. And the conference and sectional championships provide a shot for Maine West to salvage its season. “The strength of our team is kind of up the middle on the track, 400 …

Maine West Sports Roundup: Softball Takes Lead in CSL North

Baseball continues its winning ways in conference and girls soccer garners a pair of victories.

Softball: Through mid-April Maine West’s (13-8) softball team found itself struggling. The Warriors were 3-6 and they weren’t executing the routine plays that good teams make on a consistent basis. But ever since a conference victory over Deerfield, Maine West has been on a roll, winning 10 of 11 games and vaulting into first place in the CSL North. “We’ve been getting great pitching every time out. We’ve been playing a lot better defense,” Maine West coach Mike Murin said. “The big key for us offensively is that we’ve been getting some timely hits with runners on base and taking advantages of other teams’ mistakes.” The Warriors’ only loss came against Palatine in the championship game of the Rolling Meadows Stampede Tournament on April …

Maine West Sports Roundup: Girls Water Polo Looking for New Start

Boys volleyball rallied to win the last two matches in a tournament last weekend and girls soccer split a pair of games.

Girls Water Polo: At this point in the season, coach Brett Unruh knows his team’s strong points and weaknesses. “We have really done a great job in the half-court defense,” Unruh said. “We do a great job of putting pressure on other teams and forcing them to take tough contested shots.” Unfortunately, Maine West hasn’t been able to correct its biggest weakness – transition defense – and other teams have taken advantage. Maine West is currently 1-11 and 0-7 in the CSL and hasn’t won since its win over Walter Payton in late March. But Unruh is happy with the development the team’s two goaltenders, Tara Woodford and Sarah Godawa, and thinks the team is more comfortable moving the ball on the offensive end and setting up the offense. As with …

Maine West Sports Roundup: Badminton Continues Youthful Transition

Girls soccer splits a pair of CSL games and girls water polo fails to hold an early lead against New Trier

Badminton: Any team relying on a handful of new athletes to the varsity level can expect to struggle. But a roster in which 80 percent of the players possess zero varsity experience presents a daunting challenge. That was the task Coach Maggie Weber was faced with coming into this year’s badminton season. Maine West returned only two starters from last year’s team and welcomed on 10 newcomers who played primarily at the JV level last season. “We are a very young team,” Weber said. “It has been tough getting them all at the level of play expected at the varsity level, but we have had much success since the start of the season in bringing them up to where they need to be.” Maine West finds itself with a record of 4-3, but Weber says a couple…
