Veterans Museum Grand Opening in Des Plaines

The grand opening to the new Veterans of Foreign Wars Museum will take place on Nov. 10.

A new museum is opening in Des Plaines on Saturday, and it is steadily revealing military artifacts from hiding. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2992 will host a grand opening for its new museum, which will include items and information from all branches of the U.S. military, at Oakton Pavilion, 1660 Oakton Place, at 10 a.m. on Nov. 10. The retirement community is partnering with the VFW post for the project. Steve Schaefer, one of the organizers of the museum project, stated in an email to Patch that the public’s response had been great. “People have been excited about putting some of their family military artifacts on display instead of being stored in their closets,” Schaefer stated. “In fact we will be needing to move into a bigger room …

VFW Set to Expand at New Location

The Des Plaines post moved to Oakton Place, a retirement community.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2992 in Des Plaines moved to the senior living facility, Oakton Place, after renting space at the American Legion facility for five years, TribLocal reported. For the story visit TribLocal’s website. Mike Lake, adjutant of the VFW, said the space was perhaps 10 times larger than the space they rented at the American Legion. The organization will also benefit because they will no longer pay to rent a storage facility, he said. Lake said members were looking forward to expanding their organization with new programs, and working with residents at the retirement community, some of whom are veterans.
