Boys soccer had its best season in school history while a pair of swimmers earned all-state recognition.

Girls Volleyball Perseveres to Win on Senior Night: Through a tough season, Maine West left one of its better performances for Senior Night. The Warriors rallied for a 23-25, 25-18, 25-20 victory against Maine East, getting their seventh win of the season. 9. Maine West won its first conference championship in three seasons.
Last year Maine West pitcher Ariel Valles felt intimidated. There she was -- only a freshman -- pitching at the varsity level against players three years older than her. The team struggled, finishing with a losing record and fell to New Trier, 9-0, in the regional final.Fast forward one year and a lot has changed. Valles has become one of the Central Suburban League’s best pitchers, going 16-7 with a 1.63 ERA for the Warriors through the first round of the IHSA playoffs.“This year I knew what to expect,” Valles said. “I know last year was that stepping stone up to actually competing a lot with the varsity so I think I knew how to actually play with the older girls.” Coach Mike Murin saw this team had the ability and talent to make 2011 a …

Girls Soccer: Maine West captured its first postseason victory of the year last week. The No. 8 seed Warriors beat No. 9 seed Leyden, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Class 3A Wilmette Regional. UPDATE: Originally reported as the first playoff win in school history, Patch has been informed that last week's victory was not the school's first. Former Maine West soccer coach Roland Hahn said that in 1991, West defeated Lake Park 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs before losing to Hoffman Estates 5-0 in the second round. Although he did not have the archived newspapers, Hahn, who was the head coach from 1987 - 1993 for both the boys and girls soccer teams, noted that the 1989 and 1990 Maine West girls soccer teams might have also won playoff …

Maine West's Taylor Stephenson captured a conference championship in the 800.
Boys Track: Coach Andy Trotter will tell you that 2011 hasn’t been Maine West’s best season. After graduating three all-conference athletes last year, the Warriors returned no all-conference honorees for the first time in Trotter’s tenure as coach. “We didn’t really know what to expect coming into the season, but for the most part, I thought our top four or five kids have produced and have had decent seasons,” Trotter said. “We don’t have a lot of depth across the board.” But as with all high school sports, the regular season only matters as preparation for the playoffs. Baseball continues its winning ways in conference and girls soccer garners a pair of victories.
Softball: Through mid-April Maine West’s (13-8) softball team found itself struggling. The Warriors were 3-6 and they weren’t executing the routine plays that good teams make on a consistent basis. But ever since a conference victory over Deerfield, Maine West has been on a roll, winning 10 of 11 games and vaulting into first place in the CSL North. “We’ve been getting great pitching every time out. We’ve been playing a lot better defense,” Maine West coach Mike Murin said. “The big key for us offensively is that we’ve been getting some timely hits with runners on base and taking advantages of other teams’ mistakes.” The Warriors’ only loss came against Palatine in the championship game of the Rolling Meadows Stampede Tournament on April …

Boys volleyball rallied to win the last two matches in a tournament last weekend and girls soccer split a pair of games.
Girls Water Polo: At this point in the season, coach Brett Unruh knows his team’s strong points and weaknesses. “We have really done a great job in the half-court defense,” Unruh said. “We do a great job of putting pressure on other teams and forcing them to take tough contested shots.” Unfortunately, Maine West hasn’t been able to correct its biggest weakness – transition defense – and other teams have taken advantage. Maine West is currently 1-11 and 0-7 in the CSL and hasn’t won since its win over Walter Payton in late March.
