So, who won Pizza Wars 3? Was it Lincolnwood's Lou Malnati's? Or maybe Morton Grove-based Pequod's. Maybe, just maybe, a Skokie based business took home the coveted prize.
Pizza Wars 3 was a jam-packed success. The event, which started at 6 p.m. on Thursday, was held at Niles West High School. Within half-an-hour of kicking off, there was a line outside the building and some 800 tickets were already purchased. Hosted by District 219's Education Foundation for Excellence, Pizza Wars has come a long way from its humble beginnings. But who won Pizza Wars 3? More than a dozen restaurants competed - some from as far as Wheeling - but in the end, it was downtown Skokie's very own Village Inn. "After three years, it feels great to finally bring home the 'bacon,'" said Village Inn owner Randy Miles. "It's nice, you know. I feel vindicated after not winning the last two years." Last year, Jet's Pizza brought home the…

Two hair stylists in Skokie talk about security precautions - such as keeping their doors locked at all times - after the hair salon bandit robbed three area salons in a two-week span.
Despite the store being open, walk up to Hair Cuttery in Village Crossing and expect the doors to be locked. It's a security precaution the employees have taken since the hair salon bandit has robbed three area salons - two in Skokie, one in Niles - in two weeks. "We started locking our doors on Monday," said Hair Cuttery stylist Dyana Kheyo, 22. "We're terrified. Our customers are terrified. They know what's been going on. It's been all over the news." While the door was locked, both employees opened it with a smile after realizing this reporter wasn't there to rob them. "It's just a precaution," said stylist Molly Kobylt, 24. "We know he uses a gun. We know he's robbed eight salons already. Yeah, he hasn't been violent, but who's to say …

Students and faculty at Oakton Community College set up shanties to try and simulate what being homeless is all about.
With his nose running, Nick Frankel was setting up a shanty last week at Oakton Community College trying to get an idea as to what it would be like to be homeless for a night. Thursday’s cold temperatures and biting winds brought a bitter sense of realism to the estimated 730,000 people who are homeless each night across America. “The whole purpose is to simulate the experience of being homeless. In our own small way we are relating to them and that is the purpose of this,” Frankel said. “We want to take a mile in their shoes and understand what they go through on a day to day basis and step outside our own comfort zone. “ Frankel, the founding student of the Oakton chapter of Habitat for Humanity, was part of a group of 40 students and …
