The Congresswoman wrote an op-ed for Politico.com today urging support for the International Violence Against Women Act. She cited her experiences meeting women who had been raped as a weapon of war.
"We refuse to stand by as one billion of our sisters are raped, beaten, or otherwise sexually assaulted," wrote U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky in a commentary today on Politico.com. She wrote about her visit to an organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo that helps women heal after being systematically raped and otherwise maltreated during wartime. After joining a failed bipartisan effort to adopt a broad approach to rein in the country’s financial condition Wednesday, Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) of Illinois 10th Congressional District voted for the Republican House budget proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) Thursday. Dold’s decision to go along with the House Republican majority after the initial idea did not get much support from either party drew criticism from Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider, Dold’s Democratic opponent in the Nov. 6 general election. President Barack Obama was looking for bipartisan support for his $447 billion American Jobs Act proposed to a joint session of Congress Thursday night and he got it in varying degrees from local members. Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) liked elements of free trade legislation included in the package. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) was pleased that a bill she proposed August 10 may have had some influence in the president's speech. “That’s the Obama I love to hear," Schakowsky said.
