Chemical Fire Flares up at Des Plaines Laboratory

The Des Plaines Fire Department responded to a chemical fire at Abbott Molecular on Thursday.

No injuries were reported following a chemical fire that ignited at a laboratory in Des Plaines on Thursday. The Des Plaines Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Abbott Molecular, 1300 E. Touhy Ave., at 12:23 p.m. on April 4, stated Fire Chief Alan Wax. Firefighters located a fire in one of the laboratories in the east section of the building, Wax stated, and put it out with fire extinguishers about a half-hour after arriving on the scene. While a technician was working with chemicals, the fumes were ignited, but the source of the ignition remained under investigation, Wax stated. After the fumes ignited, nearby combustibles caught fire, Wax stated. The technician left the lab as the fire grew, and it activated the automatic …

Woman Screams After Waking to Intruder in Cowboy Hat

A woman in an apartment in unincorporated Des Plaines found a male intruder in her bedroom Sunday morning, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office stated.

Screams echoed from a Des Plaines apartment bedroom when a woman awoke and saw a male intruder early Sunday morning, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office stated on Monday. The woman’s roommate, who lives on the 9000 block of Kennedy Drive in unincorporated Des Plaines, called 9-1-1 immediately, police stated, after hearing the woman scream when she discovered the intruder at approximately 4:45 a.m. on March 31. The intruder, described as a white male subject, clean-shaven, 30-40 years old, 5-foot 10-inches tall, wearing a white cowboy hat, a white jacket and white shoes, fled the apartment through the front door, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office stated, after the woman screamed. Police: Dumbbell Swung by Des Plaines Man in Attack

A Des Plaines man was accused of hitting a man with an exercise dumbbell.

A Des Plaines man appeared in Rolling Meadows courthouse Thursday after, police say, he hit an unincorporated Cook County man with an exercise dumbbell, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office stated. Nicholas Ungureanu, 21, of Des Plaines was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and home invasion in connection with an attack that included using a handheld dumbbell to hit the man twice, according to a statement from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. Ungureanu and another man, Brian Fogell, 20, were accused of entering the man’s mobile home residence on the 2300 block of East Oakton St., the Cook County Sheriff’s Office stated, and chasing the man into his bedroom at approximately 4:50 p.m. on March 25. The Des Plaines Police Department provided the following reports. Vehicle Theft A semi-truck trailer was reported stolen from a parking lot on the 50 block of E. Howard Street at 1:11 a.m. on Feb. 28, police stated. Police reviewed surveillance video of the incident, according to the report, which showed a white, regular cab semi-tractor with dark lettering pull into the lot and remove the trailer. Theft Two unknown male subjects were seen on surveillance video unplugging, concealing and removing a scanner from the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood St., at 9:50 a.m. on March 1, police stated. Criminal Damage to Property An unknown white male subject, described as having a thin build, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, was seen on video surveillance removing a gallon of milk from the shelf at Jewel-Osco, 819 S. Elmhurst Road, and pretending to fall onto the floor, smashing the gallon of milk, at 3:15 p.m. on March 5, police stated. The male subject left the store without paying for the milk or reporting the incident, according to the report. This incident was consistent with a video prank trend on YouTube, police stated. Man Dies after Stabbing at Des Plaines Motel

A former Evanston resident was stabbed in the area of the heart by his girlfriend at Polo Inn in Des Plaines on March 6, according to Des Plaines police, and died from the injury on March 12.

A former Evanston man succumbed to injuries he sustained while staying at a Des Plaines motel Tuesday morning, according to Des Plaines police. Des Plaines police and fire departments responded to a report someone was stabbed at the Polo Inn, 374 S. Lee St. in Des Plaines, at approximately 5:28 p.m. on March 6, according to a police report. Charles McGinnis, 51, was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for medical treatment of a stab wound, according to police, and was taken off life support on Tuesday morning. The Cook County States Attorney’s Office felony review unit reviewed the circumstances of the case, police stated, and declined prosecution. There are dozens of warrants out for the arrest of accused criminals in Des Plaines. Patch highlights a few of them today.
