The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition Friday after the noontime fire at a popular senior living facility.
After numerous area fire departments responded to an eighth-floor apartment fire Friday which left a man in critical condition, the man, Seymour B. Cohen, 91, died Saturday of his injuries. When the fire occurred Friday, a witness responded to the call of smoke and entered Cohen's eighth-floor apartment at The Park at Golf Mill, a senior living facility at 8975 W. Golf Road. The witness saw Cohen had burn injuries on his arm and leg, Niles police said, called 911 and grabbed a fire extinguisher to attempt to put the fire out. A fire at a senior living residence on Golf Road is still being investigated.
An elderly man was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition with burns Friday afternoon, then transferred to Loyola Medical Center's Burn Unit. He was injured in a fire in his apartment on the eighth floor at The Park, a senior living home at 8975 W. Golf Road, Niles. Niles Fire Department Chief Steve Borkowski said paramedics checked out seven other people, all employees of The Park, on the scene, but they declined to go to the hospital. All had gone into the apartment to try to help bring the situation under control. Paramedics checked them for smoke inhalation, Borkowski indicated. Festival brings in more than 3,800 items for Maine Township Emergency Food Pantry.
No one could say the Niles Fire Department doesn't know how to respond. This time it was to donate food for needy families serviced by the Maine Township Emergency Food Pantry. After several weeks of friendly competition, the Niles Fire Department was declared the winner on Dec. 4 of the 'Then & Now' Festival of Trees held at Golf Mill Shopping Center. Starting with a visit from Santa at a lighting ceremony, visitors to the Center could vote for their favorite decorated trees from 10 non-profit organizations on display. Voting was counted for each item donated to the Food Pantry. The Fire Department amassed 1,295 items. The Niles Police Department was a very close second followed by St. Matthew's Church and School. Local establishments decorate trees to help feed the hungry.
The JC Penney court got a bit brighter Saturday morning when Golf Mill Shopping Center kicked off its Festival of Trees food drive. The event corresponded with the mall's welcoming of the holiday season, which included the arrival of Santa Claus into Winter Wonderland in the mall's center court and carolers from Des Plaines Willows Academy.
