A recent release is the National Book Award-winner Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis by Timothy Egan. Recounting the efforts of photographer Edward Curtis to capture the fading remnants of American Indian cultures at the beginning of the last century, it relates how he eventually published a 20-volume work, containing over 40,000 photographs, but was nearly ruined physically and financially by this colossal undertaking. Great Audiobooks for Road Trips

Borrow fascinating stories to make driving more enjoyable from the library.

This week’s column was submitted by Joel Sawyer of Readers’ Services at the Des Plaines Public Library. This has been the summer of road trips; therefore, this has been the summer of audiobooks as well. Excited vacationers have been looking for audiobooks to add adventure to their journeys. Patrons are not looking for the hottest new audiobook titles, which are likely already checked out, they are looking for a very solid book that is currently on the shelf to while away the hours spent amidst endless mile markers and, quite possibly, multiple state lines. This week’s column was submitted Joel Sawyer, of Readers Services at the Des Plaines Public Library. A Game of Thrones HBO miniseries has cast a spotlight on George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy masterpiece A Song of Ice and Fire. He also released the latest book of the series (after six years!) this summer: A Dance with Dragons. New Book By 'The Devil in the White City' Author Gives New Perspective On 1933 Berlin

Erik Larson’s newest book, In the Garden of Beasts: Love Terror and the American Family in Hitler’s Berlin provides a new perspective of the early days of Nazi power in Berlin in 1933-34: that of the American ambassador to Germany, William E. Dodd. Using a similar formula as in his prior works, among them The Devil in the White City, Larson focuses on the fastidious Dodd and his brassy daughter Martha and weaves their individual stories together into a seamless narrative that reads almost like fiction. This tandem might seem more mundane than that of a visionary architect and a murderous psychopath, but the Dodds’ stories are fascinatingly told using a great wealth of historical documentation (ironic, given that Dodd deplored the wordy …
