With 5 votes in the comments section, Glenbrook South's Sully Stadler was named the Athlete of the Week. Stadler got the win for Glenbrook South in a 3-0 victory over Maine South. Stadler had eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched and the victory over their CSL South rivals snapped Maine South’s 18-game winning streak. HONORABLE MENTION Reggie Murphy, freshman, track and field, Evanston - Murphy was a key contributor in helping the Wildkits win the CSL South conference track meet for the second consecutive season. Murphy was part of the winning 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams while also securing an individual title in the 100. With 40 votes in the comments, Glenbrook South's Jen Zucker is the Athlete of the Week. Zucker gave up only two hits while striking out 13 batters in Glenbrook South’s 10-0 victory over Wauekgan. Zucker will be attending Beloit College, a DIII school in Wisconsin, next season. HONORABLE MENTION Jake DeRousse, junior, baseball, Glenbrook North – DeRousse threw a no-hitter against Maine East, leading the Spartans to a 10-0 win in five innings. He had 10 strikeouts in the victory as the Spartans improved to 5-2 in the CSL North. Matt Kollada, junior, baseball, Deerfield –Kollada had the game-winning hit against Highland Park last week. More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins was named the Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 29 - Feb. 5: Austin Curren, junior, boys basketball, North Shore Country Day – Curren has had point totals of 25, 28 and 32 points in three conference wins for the Raiders. During that time he’s shot 67 percent from the field (29/43) and has turned the ball over only five times. Curren is also averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. Molly Kleppin, junior, girls basketball, Niles West - Kleppin led the Wolves with 15 points in a tough win against Maine South. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 9 - Jan. 15: Michelle Madalinski, senior, girls gymnastics, Maine West – At the Niles North Viking Invitational, Madalinski took first in the uneven bars with a score of 9.35. The senior also took second in balance beam (9.4) to Hersey’s Hannah Bovino. Jake Norcia, senior, boys basketball, Highland Park – Norcia hit one of the biggest shots of his career when he nailed a half-court buzzer-beater to give the Warriors a 57-54 win at Elk Grove. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Dec. 5- Dec. 11: Michael Alfieri, sophomore, boys basketball, Deerfield – Alfieri was one of the main reasons Deerfield handed CSL North rival Glenbrook North its first loss of the season. The standout sophomore scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assist in the Warriors’ 48-42 overtime win. More than 2,300 readers voted last week to crown Peter Pujals as the first North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week. The following are nominees for Nov. 7- Nov. 13: Alli Mack, senior, field hockey and karate, Glenbrook South – Mack recently took third place at the World Shotokan Karate Championships back in September. She is a nine-time state champion in karate and has three bronze and three silver medals from the Junior Olympics. In the Fall, Mack was the captain of Glenbrook South’s field hockey squad and made the all-state team. Caroline Grant, senior, girls diving, New Trier – Grant won the diving competition at the Glenbrook South sectional championships, leading New Trier to an easy team victory. The finish to Maine East’s sectional semifinal in soccer may have been the longest 10 minutes of Maine East coach Vic DiPrizio’s career. But it was well worth the emotional trauma. “It’s such an emotional ride,” DiPrizio said. “It was nerve-racking at the end. That’s soccer. Those 10 minutes, my heart has never beat so fast.” Behind Rami Dajani’s hat trick, the Blue Demons (16-7-1) got out to a 5-2 lead late in the second half. But Glenbrook South stormed back with two goals in the span of less than two minutes to make it a one-goal game. Teacher brings high school students to Islamic Community Center.
This story is part of a Patch series examining the Muslim experience 10 years after the Sept. 11 attacks. Read other stories in the series here. Twice a year, about 25 students from Glenbrook South High School in Glenview visit the Islamic Community Center of Des Plaines with their World Religions West class. The students attend a Friday afternoon prayer service followed by a question and answer session with representatives from the center, oftentimes the imam for the day or the center’s president, Ghulam Farooqie. Islam is one of many religions covered in the high school class, which has been developed and taught by department head Terrance Jozwik for almost 30 years.
