Illinois Senate OKs proposal for new casinos. The bill is now in the House.
State Sen. Terry Link's bill proposing expanded casino gambling in Illinois, including in Lake County, passed the Senate this week with a vote of 32 to 20. The bill, which proposes five new casinos, moved to the House Thursday. Prior to the Senate vote, Link told members the new casinos could generate an initial $1.2 billion for the deficit state, reported the Daily Herald. If approved, possible locations for a casino in Lake County include Park City, North Chicago and Waukegan. Senators representing Lake County who voted in favor of SB1739 were Democrat Terry Link, of Waukegan and Democrat Julie Morrison, of Deerfield. Contracts have been extended for two lobbying firms in Des Plaines, the Chicago Tribune reports. City officials will spend $110,000 in fiscal year 2013 to pay for McGuire Woods, Government Consulting Services of Illinois and Alfred G. Ronan Ltd. to represent them in gambling talks in Springfield, the newspaper reports. Contracts to McGuire Woods and Alfred G. Ronan were extended by the city, but shortened from 12 to six months. Government Consulting Services of Illinois' contact is up later this year.

Des Plaines officials are reevaluating contracts with three lobbying firms hired to represent the city in gambling expansion talks, the Chicago Tribune reports. Aldermen postponed a contract extension for McGuire Woods Consulting, LLC on Monday, after many said they don’t remember giving approval for any of the lobbying firm’s contracts. The city plans to spend $110,000 on lobbyist services in 2013, the Chicago Tribune reports. Officials will re-visit the contract discussion on March 18.

More than 280,000 people visited Rivers Casino in Des Plaines this January, generating $32,358,000 in gross receipts, the Journal & Topics newspaper reports. The numbers are slightly down from December, when the casino generated $34,984,000 in gross revenues. The city of Des Plaines will receive $1.9 million in tax dollars from the January revenue, according to the newspaper.
