Readers’ Choice for Best Pizza in Des Plaines has Historical Recipe

Sports bar wins the 2012 Readers’ Choice for best pizza with almost half the vote.

Garnering 49 percent of the votes and a rating on its directory listing, the winner of the 2012 Readers’ Choice for best pizza in Des Plaines is Countryside Saloon. Janet Bar, co-owner, said they cut their thin crust pizza into squares, like old school pizzerias, and it has a really great and long history, originating from a family recipe more than 50 years old from Bellini’s Italian Cuisine in Chicago. “It’s a pizza that has a history behind it,” Bar said. “It’s not just something that we developed when we came to Countryside.” Earlier: Readers’ Choice for best Italian food.  Julia Brenner wrote in her review of Countryside Saloon, “Great new outdoor patio!!! Two Italian Restaurants Tie for Readers Choice Award

Readers showed support in great numbers for both Cuzzin’s Café and Via Roma.

A hearty congratulations is in order for two Italian restaurants in the first-ever tie for Patch’s 2012 Readers’ Choice award. Cuzzin’s Café, 1881 E. Oakton St., and Via Roma, 686 Lee St., both drew support from readers with poll votes, ratings and reviews, and comments on the article, which, when we added it all up, came out evenly matched. Earlier: City manager resigns for Lake Zurich position. Early in the contest, readers requested Cuzzin’s to be added to the list, and the restaurant, which features authentic Italian cuisine, including pasta, homemade soups, stuffed meatballs and pork chops. Best of Readers' Choice Winner for Mexican Food

More than 200 votes were cast in poll for best Mexican food in Des Plaines.

This week we asked readers what their favorite restaurants for Mexican food were. With 60 percent of the votes, Cancun City Restaurant, 1261 E. Algonquin Road, took the title. Reader Audrey O’Callaghan commented, “Cancun City is the best! We come from Chicago to eat there. Miss the convenience of the Harlem Ave. location :(.” Juventenia Salgado owns Cancun City Restaurant with her brother and sister. They first opened in 2002, and moved to Des Plaines in 2008 to expand the restaurant.
