Rue Noir is first dropoff location for much-needed items.
Everything came together so quickly that Gary Batchelder can hardly believe it. Batchelder is working with area business owners to gather donated items for tornado victims in Joplin, MO. Working in community relations for Seeyoudowntown.com, Batchelder comes into contact with local businesses every day. In a matter of 24 hours a plan was in place to begin gathering items most needed for those in Joplin. “I have a friend that lives down there,” he said. “But I’ve been involved with charity and things like that before. Last fall I started a food drive for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. This is kind of the same thing but on a much larger scale. More than 250 people came by to take tours, watch films, reminisce and donate to the Theatre's renovation.
Sunday at the Des Plaines Theatre was a day for reminiscing--as residents (and a few out-of-towners) fought the cold weather and set foot in the theatre, some for the first time in decades--and rejoicing as more than $1,200 was donated for the still ongoing renovations. More than 250 people attended the event which included screenings of the 1935 Scrooge and A Christmas Without Snow, caroling by the Willows Academy Choir, guided tours by Project Manager Gay Meizen and complimentary cookies, coffee and hot chocolate. Families like the Klaisners, (Kevin and daughters Katie and Nicole) came out to show support and enjoy some hot chocolate. Season of Service committee seeks personal care and food items for service men and women overseas.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2992 has joined "forces" with the Des Plaines Healthy Community Partnership's Seasons of Service committee for a Make a Difference Day project. Together they are collecting personal care and food items for our service men and women that are currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Collection sites include City Hall, the Des Plaines Public Library, Prairie Lakes Community Center, Frisbie Senior Center and Oakton Community College. The soldier's wish list includes such items as: lip balm, body powder, baby wipes, duct tape, dental floss, sun block SPF 30+, hand/foot warmers, Gatorade, vacuum packer or canned pasta, chili, stew, salmon, tuna, chicken pouches, etc. A more detailed list is available at …
