Two Des Plaines-area swimmers and divers are heading to the state meet next weekend, according to the Illinois High School Association. The following athletes qualified in the events listed: 100-yard breaststroke: Diving: The state finals will be held Feb. 22 and 23 at New Trier High School in Winnetka.

Deerfield High School graduate and Riverwoods native Christina Loukas will be competing in the 3-meter springboard at the London Olympics. Loukas’ diving competition at the Olympics will stretch over three days August 3. On August 3 competition begins at 8:30 a.m., Chicago time. Loukas will have five dives. Should her cumulative score on the five dives be one of the 18 highest scores, the she native will advance to Saturday’s semifinals. On August 4, again at 8:30 a.m. here, the 18 divers will complete their five dives. The highest 12 scores will then advance to the August 5 finals which will begin at 7 p.m. London time or 1 p.m. here. Loukas can be seen streamed live on Comcast for all of her competition. Former Deerfield High diver Christina Loukas to compete in London Olympics in early morning hours here.
It will be coffee and bagels with Christina if you want to catch the Riverwoods native and Deerfield High School graduate in this 2012 Olympics this year. Christina Loukas, who graduated from Deerfield High School in 2004, will be one of the area’s few representatives at the Olympics in London, which open this Friday. Earlier: North Suburban Olympian’s Journey Twists and Turns “Londonbound” is what Loukas tweeted last week when she left for the Olympics. If you want to watch Loukas compete live, you will need to get up early since London is six hours ahead of the time here in Midwest. The diving competition at the Olympics will stretch over three days beginning Friday, Aug. 3. On that Friday competition begins at 8:30 a.m. Chicago time. …

Almost 10,000 votes were cast during Patch's week-long poll; see who came out on top.
Patch Athlete of the Week, Nov. 21- Nov. 27: Erin Purdy is this week's Patch Athlete of the Week. Garnering about 56 percent of the vote, Purdy topped a deep field that included local basketball and football players. There were nearly 10,000 votes, but Purdy's state championship win in diving gave her the edge and made her this week's winner. She became Deerfield’s second diving state champion, following Christina Loukas, who won three straight years from 2001-2003. More than 2,300 readers voted last week to crown Peter Pujals as the first North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week. The following are nominees for Nov. 7- Nov. 13: Alli Mack, senior, field hockey and karate, Glenbrook South – Mack recently took third place at the World Shotokan Karate Championships back in September. She is a nine-time state champion in karate and has three bronze and three silver medals from the Junior Olympics. In the Fall, Mack was the captain of Glenbrook South’s field hockey squad and made the all-state team. Caroline Grant, senior, girls diving, New Trier – Grant won the diving competition at the Glenbrook South sectional championships, leading New Trier to an easy team victory.
