Des Plaines city council approved a plan to contract the same event promoter as last year, amid concerns expressed by aldermen, the Daily Herald reported.
It appears the Summer Fling will return to downtown Des Plaines this year, as city council voted in favor of contracting the same company to run the event as last year, the Daily Herald reported. Several aldermen expressed reservations about using the same event promoter, the Daily Herald reported, but with such a small amount of time to prepare, endorsed the plan. At Des Plaines Summer Fling in 2012 David Cassidy performed for thousands packed in front of the Des Plaines Public Library and the strip mall across from the Des Plaines Theatre. A Led Zepplin cover band, Led Zepplin 2, performed at Des Plaines Summer Fling in 2011, where Patch caught a rare glimpse of a Mexican wrestler, Lucha Libre, and the character Stewie from the animated …

Shows scheduled for this weekend at the Des Plaines Theatre have been canceled due to a roof collapse that occurred earlier this month, the Chicago Tribune reports. A 15 by 15 piece of the ceiling fell on Feb. 3. While nobody was hurt, the issue has further set back the theatre's deadline for completing safety code requirements put in place by the fire marshall and the city, the Tribune reports. Fire curtain, furnace room, boiler room among building code violations to be reviewed.
A Building Code Committee meeting called to discuss four pages of code compliance issues for the Des Plaines Theatre is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 9. A fire curtain, the boiler room and the furnace room are among the items to be reviewed. Some of the items had a compliance date of Dec. 15, and, when it was determined the theater had outstanding code violations at that time, city council asked for an extension and a later meeting to address the issues. Des Plaines Theatre hosted a grand opening in November 2011 after substantial renovations were complete. Producers of stand-up show look for traction in second show in monthly series.
Three Chicago area comedians will take the stage at Des Plaines Theatre on Saturday in the second show of a new monthly comedy series at the renovated performance venue. Jessica Avila, co-producer, of Chicago, grew up in Des Plaines and said she wanted to bring live entertainment back to the suburban city. About 125 tickets were sold for the first show on Feb. 4, and Avila said she hoped they could sell at least that amount for this show as well, which features comedians Danny Kallas, Joe Fernandez and Lewis Rhine. “There are a lot of great comedians in Chicago, and I just feel that their names need to be out there in the suburbs more,” Avila said. Earlier: Best of Patch, Mexican food. Avila said she thought Des Plaines residents would …

The stand-up showcase this Saturday could be the first of many at the Des Plaines Theatre.
This Saturday, stand-up comedy will come to the recently-renovated Des Plaines Theater for what Tim Brochu and Jessica Avila hope is a long and popular stay. The Chicago-based couple founded BurbCity Productions two months ago, only five months after they began dating, but within that short span they have already turned their shared love of stand-up into an engine that they hope will ignite Des Plaines and Chicago residents’ passion for a comedic style they say is sometimes overlooked in Chicagoland. Neither works fulltime in comedy; Avila, a 29-year-old former Des Plaines native, is a fulltime server and part-time small show producer, while Brochu, a Portland transplant, is a GrubHub sales executive with half-a-dozen years of part-time …
