New Electronic Highway Sign Near Touhy and Lee Likely To Be Approved

Business owners hope advertisements will attract businesses to Des Plaines.

Residents and highway drivers will likely see a flashy new sign in the near future that will have advertisements from local businesses and promotional material for the city of Des Plaines.   City council members are considering a proposal to allow a sign with electronic messaging capabilities near Interstate 90 and Touhy Avenue.  Patrick Devereaux, senior vice president of Siete 7, presented the proposal at last night's city council meeting. So far, council members seem very receptive to the idea, calling the proposal exciting and saying that it would give Des Plaines some well-deserved attention. Des Plaines Fire Department to Cut One Position in 2011

Firefighters say overtime costs likely to rise.

The Des Plaines Fire Department will have one less supervisory position in 2011, and next year's budget was passed at the City Council meeting Monday night. A deputy chief position will be eliminated from the department's staff list, as outlined by the 2011 budget.  City Council members had banked on saving about $90,000 in payroll costs, but there is a hitch – city code dictates that when a fire department position is eliminated, all staff members are "demoted," or moved down, and the firefighter with the least amount of seniority will be eliminated.  Because of this, the city will actually save $32,000, the salary of the firefighter with the least seniority.
