Vacant Building on Miner Street Could Soon Be For Sale

The Des Plaines building is currently owned by the city.

  A vacant Miner Street building owned by the city of Des Plaines could soon be for sale, the Chicago Tribune reports. The building located at 1486 Miner Street has been owned by the city for the past five years. City officials are considering selling it to a developer to help generate sales tax revenue. The building brought in $32,000 in sales tax revenue when it was privately owned in 2008, the newspaper reports.

Des Plaines Company Among Many to Announce Layoffs

More than 1,200 employees statewide will lose their jobs in coming months, according to local media reports.

  A handful of Cook County companies, including one in Des Plaines, will be closing or have announced mass layoffs, according to notices filled with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development.  Those companies include:  FreightCar America, Inc. in Danville is expected to layoff the most employees—254—in the state in coming months. The layoffs are expected to begin on April 18 and continue through May 2.  Other suburban companies that will be affected by layoffs or closings include:  The Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires employers to provide 60 days advance notice of pending plant closures or mass layoffs, according to the Department of Commerce and Economic Development website.

Des Plaines McDonald's to Eliminate Menu Items

The restaurant chain is eliminating Chicken Selects and The Fruit & Walnut Salad, the Associated Press reports.

  Say goodbye to some well-known items on McDonald’s menu. The fast-food chain is eliminating Chicken Selects and Fruit & Walnut Salad from its menu and is considering cutting the Angus burger as well, the Associated Press reports. McDonald’s is now introducing more limited-time menu items like the new McFish Bites. Chicken Selects were added to the menu in 2004, and the Fruit & Walnut Salad was introduced in 2005. Des Plaines has the following McDonald's locations: 444 S. River Road 1101 Oakton Street 3067 Manheim Road 1960 S. Mount Prospect Road 725 W. Office Depot, OfficeMax to Merge in $1.2 Billion Deal

Office Depot will acquire OfficeMax to combine two of the leading office supply stores nationwide.

  Office Depot is merging with Naperville-based OfficeMax, the Associated Press reports. Office Depot will aquire its rival company in a $1.2 billion all stock deal. OfficeMax addressed the merger in a brief statement posted on its website today: “The OfficeMax mission is simple: We provide workplace innovation that enables our customers to work better. As a combined company, OfficeMax and Office Depot will have the resources to provide a wide array of services and solutions to help you move your business ahead,” the statement read. Until the merger is complete, which is expected at the end of 2013, OfficeMax and Office Depot will continue to run as two separate companies, the OfficeMax statement read. Revenue Up, Attendance Down at Rivers Casino in January

Rivers Casino has led Illinois casinos in adjusted gross receipts during every full month of operation since it opened at the end of the summer in 2011.

Rivers Casino reported the least number of admissions during a full month of operation in January since opening in 2011. The Des Plaines casino was visited by 286,077 people during the first month of the new year, according to a monthly report posted on the Illinois Gaming Board’s website. In all but two other months since opening, the state’s 10th casino reported more than 300,000 people going through its turnstiles. In January 2012, 291,527 people visited the casino, according to a report from the Illinois Gaming Board. While admissions were lower, revenue was higher compared with the same time last year. In January 2013, $32,358,000 in adjusted gross receipts was reported, compared with January 2012, when $30,307,000 in adjusted gross …

New Coffee Shop Proposed for Des Plaines Metra Depot

The City of Des Plaines will seek bids to renovate the Metra depot, TribLocal reported.

A new coffee shop may open at the Des Plaines Metra depot, TribLocal reported. The city will seek bids to renovate the train station next month, TribLocal reported, which will include an expanded area for a coffee shop.
