Attempted Robbery at Des Plaines Jewelry Store 2nd in 3 Months

R.C. Wahl Jewelers owner says it’s a coincidence, and, before November, the store had not experienced an attempted robbery in more than five years.

The Des Plaines Police Department provided the following report. For the second time in approximately three months a robbery was attempted on a Des Plaines jewelry store. In both cases the suspected thief did not escape with jewelry from R.C. Wahl Jewelers, a Des Plaines staple located at 1514 Miner St. Bob Wahl, owner, said the attempted robberies on Nov. 3 and Jan. 29 were a coincidence, and before these incidents it had been more than five years since another robbery was attempted. He said the events did not impact the business. “Unfortunately this and other businesses are targets for quick, easy money,” Wahl said. Des Plaines Jewelry Store, Customers Span Generations

R.C. Wahl Jewelers’ recipe for more than 100 years of success includes an appeal to multiple age groups.

One iconic Des Plaines business has roots going back to Germany more than 100 years ago. F.X. Wahl moved to the U.S. from Germany in the 1880’s, and opened a store in Chicago in 1894. His son, F.F. Wahl, opened Wahl Jewelers in Des Plaines in 1949. Heather Wahl, with her parents Bob and Barba Wahl, proudly manages her family’s store, R.C. Wahl Jewelers, 1514 Miner St., now in its eighth generation. Heather Wahl said their customers were multigenerational as well, which has contributed to the jewelry store’s longevity. “Grandma could be remounting a ring and a 20-something could be getting engaged,” Wahl said.
