The unexpected move comes as the Daily Herald endorses Schakowsky in the 9th Congressional District.
The Chicago Tribune has endorsed newcomer Tim Wolfe, a Republican from Arlington Heights, over longtime Rep. Jan Schakowsky, of Evanston, for the 9th Congressional District. The move came as something of a surprise, since the newspaper has endorsed Schakowsky in the past, including in 2010. It said Washington could use more of Wolfe's fiscal restraint. Earlier: Your choices for Congress: Tim Wolfe Earlier: Your choices for Congress: Jan Schakowsky The Daily Herald's editorial board said it had mixed feelings, but ultimately decided to endorse Schakowsky over Wolfe. Her standing as chief deputy whip of the House Democrats benefits the suburbs, the paper said. The Chicago Sun-Times has decided not to endorse candidates, saying it will …

Get to know the candidates for Congress who will be on the Nov. 6 ballot. Tim Wolfe, a Republican, is running against incumbent Jan Schakowsky in the 9th Congressional District.
Patch: As you go around the 9th district, which issues are people talking about the most? What is it that has people worried or concerned? Tim Wolfe: One of the major concerns is the representation they’ve had. They haven’t seen Schakowsky in their district campaigning, or just on a normal basis. I think a big issue is kids getting out of college and not being able to find a job or having to move to different state. How would you address those issues in Congress? Wolfe: It boils down to getting the economy moving and it has to be by private sector jobs being created. We have to get government out of the way. We shouldn’t look at government as a job creator. What we need to do is simplify the tax code, make it more straightforward, lower …

Get to know the candidates for Congress who will be on the Nov. 6 ballot. Schakowsky, a Democrat and longtime incumbent, is being challenged by Republican Tim Wolfe.
Patch sat down recently with the two candidates running in Illinois' 9th Congressional District, Democrat Jan Schakowsky, the incumbent, and Republican Tim Wolfe, to get information on their views. Our questions, and Rep. Schakowsky's answers, follow. Patch: As you go around the 9th district, which issues are people talking about the most? What is it that has people worried or concerned? Schakowsky: Issues related to the economy are clearly the main thing. People in my district are concerned about issues such as health care, housing foreclosure and being able to send their kids to college. Seniors are very worried that Republicans want to cut their Medicare and Social Security, and there’s always lots of various immigrant issues. The …

Neighboring members of Congress express different views on most issues a few miles apart.
Stimulating innovation with alternative sources of energy may be the one issue where Democrats and Republicans in Congress can come to an agreement on legislation as neighboring members of Congress gave a similar message a few miles apart Sunday. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston), whose 9th district includes Des Plaines, and Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) expressed the same hope to diverse groups in New Trier Township Sunday. “Why should we innovate when it comes to energy and buy the stuff from China to bring it back to the United States,” asked Schakowsky. “We should be building the wind turbines, we should be building the batteries, we should be making the things right here in America.” While Schakowsky was presenting her ideas to …

The 9th District will expand to Wilmette, Winnetka, Northfield and Kenilworth.
Proposed changes to the Congressional Districts in Illinois will hit home with voters in the 9th District, which includes Des Plaines. The plan was delivered to Gov. Pat Quinn's desk on Tuesday. Dubbed "gerrymandering" by Rep. Robert Dold (R-10), the new 9th District "includes a portion of Chicago’s lakefront and Evanston, Lincolnwood, Skokie, Morton Grove, Niles and Park Ridge," according to the Morton Grove Champion. It will expand to "all of Wilmette, Winnetka, Northfield and Kenilworth, including the 10th District home of conservative U.S. Rep. Robert Dold of Kenilworth." Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-9) was re-elected as Representative for the 9th District last year. Reporter Karen Berkowitz continued, "Schakowsky has taken on some new …

Skokie couple invites congresswoman over to stump for votes near Pollak's backyard.
More than 50 residents of Skokie, Evanston, Niles, Des Plaines and other areas within Illinois' 9thCongressional District gathered on Sunday for an opportunity to meet with Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky. As hosts, Barry and Lisa Lipin opened their residence in the Devonshire neighborhood of Skokie to the event, which was not far from the home of Joel Pollack, the Republican trying to unseat Schakowsky. Lisa Lipin kicked off the session by describing how she met the six-term congresswoman several years ago: "I called Jan's office about a specific toy that was dangerous and it turned out that her grandchildren had the same toy, so she was able to relate." Consequentially, the toy was banned in Illinois and a few other states. Schakowsky …
