The babies are due this summer and fall. Look through the photo gallery of the expectant moms, including the most incredible ultrasound picture you'll ever see.
Just a little more than a week after Mother’s Day, the Brookfield Zoo announced Monday it has three new moms to be. Dolphins Allie, Tapeko and Spree are expected to give birth during the summer and fall, according to a zoo release. “Allie, Tapeko, and Spree are all healthy and their pregnancies are progressing well,” said Jennifer Langan, associate veterinarian for the Chicago Zoological Society. Allie, 26, and Tapeko, 31, are experienced mothers, having raised five babies between them, including Tapeko’s two daughters, Noelani, 9, and Allison, 7, who also live at the zoo. This will be the first baby for Spree, 10, who is at the zoo from Minnesota as part of the Bottlenose Dolphin Breeding Consortium. The cooperative focuses on building a …

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.
Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try …
Kick start the summer fun by celebrating the last day of school with the kids
School's almost out and boy are my kids ready for their fun in the sun. While I still think it is unfair that parents don't get the summer off, I do look forward to our annual tradition of kicking off the summer break with some fun together. Parents, if you can, take the afternoon off or dedicate a whole day for pure fun. Here are some ideas to inspire your celebration: 1. Hit the pool! Let the splashing begin. Head on over to your local pool and start working on that gorgeous tan while splashing around with the kids. 2. Go see a movie during the day. If it's raining or you just want to enjoy extreme air conditioning, take advantage of that early bird, weekday discount to see the latest family flick. It will be a rare pleasure for the …

Want to apply for the East Maine Elementary School District 63 board? One seat is open, as John Jekot, who was elected a Village of Niles trustee, is required to step down from the school board.
John Jekot, a 14-year member of the East Maine School District 63 board, is moving on. He won the April 9 election for village of Niles trustee, and was sworn in to the village's board last week. The Illinois Attorney General's office does not permit an individual to serve on a school board and a village board at the same time, he said. As his seat becomes vacant, the district is accepting applications from individuals interested in the position, and will appoint a board member at its June 3 special meeting. That person will serve until the April 2015 election. While Jekot said he's pleased he won election to the village board, he acknowledged it's not easy leaving a school district where he has served nearly a decade and a half. Like …

An arbitrator ruled that a fired Des Plaines Police officer be reinstated, but the city plans to go to court to reverse that decision.
An arbitrator ruled that fired Des Plaines police officer John Bueno should return to work, but the city is going to court to challenge that decision. Des Plaines police said that Bueno's June 3 reinstatement will be on hold pending the court action. Bueno was fired by Des Plaines for violating the city's use of force policy, failing to disclose use of force, and lying to internal investigators, a press release from the city states. "The arbitrator upheld every charge filed by the City against Bueno and agreed the City had just cause to discipline Bueno for violating these rules," the statement reads. "However, rather than upholding the termination of Bueno's employment, the arbitrator gave Bueno a 15 month suspension..." "We are extremely…

The bill, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would prohibit all teens 17 and younger from using UV tanning beds.
Legislation to ban minors from indoor tanning beds was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday after being approved by the Illinois Senate. House Bill 188, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would ban Illinois minors age 17 and younger from UV tanning beds. Currently, minors ages 14 to 17 are allowed to tan if they provide a parent's signature. Spray-on tanning is exempt from the legislation, as is phototherapy, which applies to situations where a physician supervises tanning when it is necessary to treat a medical condition. Radogno said in a press release that she sponsored the bill to protect Illinois minors from the serious health risks involved with indoor tanning beds. “Not only do children not realize …
