Eliades Hernandez, 40, of Mount Prospect, has lived in the area his entire life, and graduated from Maine East High School in Park Ridge. Hernandez has been a counselor at Maine West High School in Des Plaines for eight years, and this is his sixth year coaching freshmen girls’ soccer. He is also the faculty sponsor of the Polish-American Club, and helps out with the Hispanic Club. After win against Fenton High School, 1-0, on May 8, Hernandez answered a few questions about Des Plaines. Patch: Where is one of your favorite places to go in Des Plaines? The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, May 7 – May 13: Sully Stadler, senior, baseball, Glenbrook South – Stadler got the win for Glenbrook South in a 3-0 victory over Maine South. Stadler had eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched and the victory over their CSL South rivals snapped Maine South’s 18-game winning streak. Reggie Murphy, freshman, track and field, Evanston - Murphy was a key contributor in helping the Wildkits win the CSL South conference track meet for the second consecutive season. With 22 votes in the comments section, Shelia Grant-Shaffer won the Athlete of the Week. Grant-Shaffer took home the shot put title at the CSL North track and field championships. Her throw of 40-3.5 was good enough to break a school record for the Giants. HONORABLE METNION Sam Koloms, junior, baseball, Glenbrook South – Koloms gave up only four hits in a 4-1 victory over Niles West in a CSL South matchup. Koloms struck out six batters, allowed no earned runs, and improved his record to 4-1 on the season. Margaret Bamgbose, senior, track and field, Evanston – Bamgbose repeated as the CSL South champion in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 200-meter sprint. Nate Hassman, 35, of Park Ridge, has taught science classes at Maine West High School for 12 years. He teaches freshmen Biology and sophomore Chemistry at the Des Plaines high school, and he has been an assistant track coach for the jumpers since 2007. Hassman, who grew up in the Quad Cities, was also the freshmen football coach for a number of years. Hassman dropped by the concession stand at the all-freshmen track meet at Maine West on May 8, and answered a few questions about Des Plaines. With 40 votes in the comments, Glenbrook South's Jen Zucker is the Athlete of the Week. Zucker gave up only two hits while striking out 13 batters in Glenbrook South’s 10-0 victory over Wauekgan. Zucker will be attending Beloit College, a DIII school in Wisconsin, next season. HONORABLE MENTION Jake DeRousse, junior, baseball, Glenbrook North – DeRousse threw a no-hitter against Maine East, leading the Spartans to a 10-0 win in five innings. He had 10 strikeouts in the victory as the Spartans improved to 5-2 in the CSL North. Matt Kollada, junior, baseball, Deerfield –Kollada had the game-winning hit against Highland Park last week.
