Illinois is one of the top most corrupt states in the USA. I have two more years in this GodRead More forsaken state, then after my daughter finishes school, I'm out of here! My home may be paid off, but I still pay at least $500 a month for property taxes--and I live in the older section with a 55 year old house!!

Shameful! The audacity to want more is as bold as cat manure. They sell the lottery, lease theRead More toll way, to their friends, all the while saying they need more money. This really stinks.
The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 10:44 am
Let me say something as a graduate of the University of Michigan, who had the tougher road toRead More admission as a non-resident. The problem with affirmative action is how to quantify it. Michigan can have its pick of students from the elite private and public schools in and around Detroit, Chicago, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Schools in Detroit certainly don't offer the educational opportunities that a school like Detroit Country day, or public high schools elite suburbs like Winnetka, Illinois or Bethesda, Maryland do. But, is a kid from a very rural area in the U.P. any more prepared for U of M than a kid from Detroit? By the same token, a kid from a farm outside of Muskegon represents the same kind of diversity to a kid from Westchester County, New York as someone from Detroit.
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 10:59 am
Observor, It may have been Walt Williams who said that the problem with affirmative action is thatRead More it can set up a kid to fail. Schools that serve large groups of minorities often do not prepare a kid for an elite school, whehter it's a private school like Harvard or Duke, or an elite public school like Michigan or Cal-Berkeley. He suggested that a student, regardless of race or color, should always select a school that is suited to his qualifications. Someone from an inner-city school in California would be better off going to a university in the California State University system, rather than a school in the University of California system. The idea is that he can succeed in college and move on to a successful career. If a person ill-prepared for Berkeley or UCLA attends either of those schools, he has a greater likelihood of flunking out and giving up on higher education. My father attended a 1-room school house until the 6th grade. He then attended a rural junior high and high school. He wound up going to a land-grant university 11 years after graduating from high school, courtesy of the GI Bill. Because of his going to a school that, while good in the field of agriculture, was an average university overall, he was able to move into management eventually transferred to Chicago. So, I attended a very good suburban high school that prepared me for the University of Michigan. If he had gone to a school for which he wasn't prepared, he could very well have dropped out, which would have meant no management opportunity or transfer to Chicago. I know a lot of very successful people who went to small, liberal arts colleges or public universities that aren't of the same caliber as Michigan, UCLA, or the University of Illinois. Yes, going to a school like Michigan, Harvard, Duke, Northwestern, or Stanford can lead to great opportunities. But, going to a non-elite college or university doesn't close the doors on those opportunities.
"The Black Panther of Poetry" April 23, 2014 at 12:02 pm
Fair is Fair!!! Now if we can only get Affirmative Action totally out of such sports as BasketballRead More and Football and the others, where the minority there is truly and obviously inferior but yet is given a shoe in because his race promotes, finance and overly spectates in these Professions.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 11:58 am
I read every single link on the Common Core website, and there is virtually NO information on it. ItRead More says that the Common core was developed by the State Governpor... not federally funded. You can search all you want ont the CC website, and you will never find the list of people that Steven Lee gave you above. It does not disclose how the development of these sandards was funded, and by whom. It SAYS educators were involved. So you believe that, and it is enough for you. I does NOT disclose how federal funds ARE being used to prod states into accepting the CC standards. It is a PR website, and nothing more. If I am skeptical about something, I try to find unaffiliated sources of information. And I read editorials pro and con. And I read the skeptics, and fact-check. I immediatly rule out any post mentioning "illuminati", aliens, eugenics, or that seems blatantly racist or otherwise extreme. But I also have to say that although I allow that you have a different point of view, I can't say that you have provided me with any reasonable "facts" that I can follow up on. So you are welcome to your opinion, but I don't find it a helpful or persuasive one.
CowDung April 23, 2014 at 12:00 pm
" It says that the Common core was developed by the State Governpor... " Apparently youRead More missed this: "The Common Core State Standards drafting process relied on teachers and standards experts from across the country. Teachers were involved in the development process in four ways: 1) They served on the Work Groups and Feedback Groups for the ELA and math standards. 2) The National Education Association (NEA), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), among other organizations were instrumental in bringing together teachers to provide specific, constructive feedback on the standards 3) Teachers were members of teams states convened to provide regular feedback on drafts of the standards. 4) Teachers provided input on the Common Core State Standards during the two public comment periods."

@Stones - I actually agree with you. My problem is simply the economic conditions presentlyRead More affecting Illinois, the lack of any credible solution and the nature of the Chicago and Cook County governments which can't seem to keep crooks out of office. I think Presidential libraries serve valuable purposes (and that doesn't matter which President it happens to be) can provide economic benefits to the area in which the library is location (whether short/long term is another question which I am not in a position to answer).

I would suggest that Chicago be required to have a credit check performed before any publicRead More assistance is provided to them. The City of Chicago is on Public Assistance already - they should need to certify for benefits every two weeks and prove the need for more funds from us - the employer and safety net of Chicago Government. No Library Needed - Put his online and be progressive
Political PR Machine April 23, 2014 at 08:38 am

Phaedrus Pirsig April 23, 2014 at 11:56 am
TC, Illinois has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, pretty sure we could fillRead More those teaching spots overnight. With the technology we have today we could easily supplement the cost of these state breaking pensions that fraudulently get bumped up in a teacher's final years. Charter schools are doing a better job without union teachers. During Chicago's teacher strike I listened to union teachers that barely spoke English. No complaints about the salaries, just get rid of the pensions.
Grumpy Old Man April 22, 2014 at 07:10 am
@Greg Smith - LOL. More nonsense from the Rush crowd. Millions of blacks who are just asRead More disadvantaged as your scumbag gang banger buddies don't drive around shooting up their neighborhoods. You are also, clearly a racist. There are millions of white Americans who aren't born into money and who are unemployed. You should be thankful that we still have a war on drugs. Grumpy Old Man April 22, 2014 at 07:25 am

Well, here comes more get rid of the guns talk. You seldom hear why the gangs are at war. The reasonRead More is market share. It's about money. That is how they support themselves. So, let's concentrate on removing what the fight over...drug sales, prostitution and the like. Rid the neighborhoods of that and there will be less to fight over. Squeeeeeze their profits down to zero and there will be less violence!

Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. It probably took 3 judges to get them to grant the warrants they were looking for. And the AttorneyRead More Registration and Disciplinary Commission (ARDC) is the "bar" you are looking for. You will find specific rules there and though anyone can lodge complaints, and all complaints are heard, the accused members of the bar have a right to defend themselves and their actions. The attorney for the arrested kid can file for sanctions, too, and move to suppress the information obtained by the warrant if it is judged to have been granted erroneously.

So you think religion is the primary cause of war. OK. How do you explain over 100 million peopleRead More who were killed by their own god-less Communist governments in the last century? They ban religions in most Communist countries so shouldn't those countries have been peaceful, Utopian places?
Hitchens! April 21, 2014 at 01:24 pm
To repost a response from another thread, "as for Communism, just because it demands atheismRead More doesn’t mean it follows from atheism. It’s just incompatible with any religion because the Communist ideology will not tolerate any competitors. It’s too close to a religion itself". Hitler and the Nazi Party made a treaty with the Pope during WWII, although it was a shaky one at best. Stalin, Mao, and those idiots in North Korea forced citizens to believe that they were divine individuals, thereby establishing "state religion". Stalin was more about absolute power, but never openly rejected the idea that he was believed to be a divine figure. You are confusing the idea of communism as the alternative to religion. Either way, I am not going to get into that here. Have a nice day, and get rid of your religion. I did, and have never been happier. Religion poisons everything.

My favorite part about easter is when jesus rises up yet no one saw the guy in 2000 years evenRead More though he could come down for a second hahahaha. Bible says satan comes and goes from god to earth and vice versa...and we know is ok for jesus to show his face since he did it in "front of hundreds" back in the day where you can't go back and check hahahaha so to make a long story short religions want real money in exchange for funny stories. I have a few questions for the religious freaks: why did jesus stay dead 3 days? Couldn't death be defeated right away? And what kind of sacrifice jesus did if he came back to life? Isn't sacrifice something like permanent? Religions were started by morons, vicious and slick like the type you see in Afghanistan today...and it became the greatest business: no expense as promising pies in the sky is free, no taxes since religions get the breaks yet collect hard cash every sunday rain or shine...boy I wish I would have thought of that myself. At least jews and Christians are decent enough to chill regarding warfare unlike the muslims...but still, religions are poor-designed and nicely wraped garbage
