All five Chicago schools are magnets with selective enrollment. Stevenson has some advantageRead More because of sheer size and # of AP tests the students there take. I still think that Df and HP are more desirable because of their slightly smaller size.

So the questions are: "What does #1 do that's better than HPHS? How can HPHS improve? What'sRead More holding us back?" Compare and contrast.

This type of security system should be in every school in the country. Yes, it's expensive and IRead More know a lot of people will say that it's overkill because problems do not occur that often and there's no sense in being paranoid. But to protect our kids, I'd rather be paranoid and have them safe than to pooh-pooh it and regret it later on. The security is not just for sickies like Lanza who come into a school and shoot randomly. Non-custodial parents kidnap their kids, sex offenders and drug dealers are a danger, for instance. We don't live in a goody-goody world and our kids are our future. Protect them.

My eldest great-granddaughter (now 10) was taught how to read and write cursive at home at the sameRead More time she was taught how to tell time on an old-fashioned (as opposed to digital) clock. She thinks cursive is "pretty" and actually enjoys writing things like thank-you notes. She also is starting a collection of what she calls "real clocks" because she's seen that they're not all the same, some are fancier than others, etc. My point? Children can be taught cursive and other "old-fashioned" things at home - you don't have to depend on schools.
