When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!

June 19-25th marks lighting safety week

June 19-25th marks lighting safety week. Per the National Weather Service, lightning is a major cause of storm related deaths in the U.S. According to the NWS Storm Data, over the last 30 years (1980-2009) the U.S. has averaged 55 reported lightning fatalities per year. Summer is the peak season for lightning to strike, although it can occur year round.

Here are some quick tips to stay safe this season:
* Large enclosed structures (substantially constructed buildings) tend to be much safer than smaller or open structures.
* If you are caught outside in a lightning storm, stay clear of trees or canopies. Crouch down, put your feet together and cover your ears to limit possible hearing damage. Keep at least 15 feet away from other people.
* Cars, trucks, buses, vans or other fully enclosed vehicles provide good shelter from lightning when the windows are rolled up. Avoid contact with metal or conducting surfaces outside or inside the vehicle. Do not leave the vehicle.
* Do not use landlines, use cell or cordless phones instead. Don’t touch electrical equipment or cords; unplug equipment before a storm. Don’t wash your hands, take a shower, wash dishes or use a washer/dryer. Stay away from windows and doors; stay off porches. Don’t lie on or lean against concrete floors or walls. Don’t leave the dog outside on a chain or in a doghouse.

The best way to protect yourself from lightning is to avoid it altogether. The last thing you want is to be caught outside in a storm. Have a lightning safety plan, and cancel or postpone activities early if thunderstorms are expected. Monitor weather conditions and get to a safe place before the weather becomes threatening.
