Is Your Dog Scared of Fireworks? Here are 6 Tips

Animals with anxiety or just great hearing tend to get scared on the Fourth of July. From snug clothes to rock n' roll, there are ways to keep pets calm when the fireworks go boom.

It's very common for pets to get scared this time of year. Fireworks and thunderstorms can startle the tamest animals.

Jill Korfist, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the  offered some tips to keep your furry friends calm when it starts to sounds like the sky is falling. 

  1. For pets who have anxiety or noise phobias, make sure the house is secure and doors leading outside are closed. Pets have been known to rush out of homes to escape the noise, then getting hurt in the street. 
  2. Close all the windows to minimize outside noise. Place your pets somewhere quiet.
  3. Turn on white noise sources such as music, fans, laundry or dishwashing machines. 
  4. Products such as the Thundershirt can keep animals comfortable during moments of high anxiety. 
  5. Over-the-counter antihistamines can help animals with mild anxiety, but consult your veterinarian before giving your pets any medication. 
  6. If your pet is suffering from severe anxiety, consult your veteranarian for additional help.
