On Saturday, April 16, the Lattof YMCA is encouraging all kids and parents in the Northwest Community to make a play date, come to the Y and commit to being active every day. It’s all part of the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day™ – the nation’s largest health day for families. The free event will take place at the Lattof YMCA from 10am-2pm and feature activities such as the Chicago Fire Soccer, Jamba Juice and healthy snacks, Summer Camp Open House Activities, and much more!

“Activities across the Chicagoland area on April 16 showcase what our Ys do every day to make the lives of children in their communities healthier, more active and connected,” said Richard Malone, President & CEO, YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. “The Y of Metro Chicago works year-round to promote youth development, healthy living and social responsibility to families in the communities we serve.”

Healthy Kids Day is designed to teach healthy habits to kids and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity. At a time when 35 percent of children in Illinois are overweight or obese (according to Kids Count, a project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation), developing an interest in active play and good nutrition, among other healthy habits, is more important than ever.

Lattof YMCA 2011 Healthy Kids Day activities include:

  • Healthy Cooking Demos and Snacks
  • Shuttle Runs and Vertical Jumps
  • Scuba Flipper Races
  • Storytime and Bookmark Making
  • Home Depot Crafts
  • Chicago Fire Soccer
  • Golf Games
  • Facepainting
  • Rock Wall Climbing (outdoors, weather pending)
  • Jungle Gym Maze
  • Family Zumba

“We know that it can be hard to find the time to incorporate more active play and healthier habits into an already busy daily schedule,” said Katy Socha, Health and Wellness Director, Lattof YMCA “ Don’t call it exercise. Don’t call it physical activity. Don’t count the minutes. Just be active and have fun!”

Lattof YMCA is proud to host representatives from Jamba Juice, Athletico, Ressurection Healthcare, Beau-K Catering, Chicago Fire, Des Plaines Public Library, Home Depot and Chiro One who will be presenting workshops on healthy cooking, facepainting, conducting relay races, making arts and crafts, and plenty more!!

Nationally, Healthy Kids Day is supported by the Dodge brand, PepsiCo and Sam’s Club and will be celebrated at nearly 1,600 Ys across the country, with more than 700,000 families expected to attend this year.
