picked up a statement win by stunning host Glenbrook North 53-40 Friday night in Northbrook. Brittany Collins dominated the glass, grabbing 19 rebounds, and Amanda Hoye scored 19 of her 25 points in the second half to expand the Warriors’ nine-point halftime lead.

With Collins, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, leading the way, the Warriors outrebounded the Spartans 38-27.

“That was the big difference,” GBN coach Renee Brosnan said. “In the first half we stopped them on the first shot, but we need to box out and we didn’t do that.”

The Warriors (6-12, 4-1) scored the last five points of the first quarter to take a 13-8 lead. They gradually built up the lead in the second, heading into the break up 29-20.

In the second half, Collins (11 points) continued to dominate the boards and Hoye found her shot. The senior guard made three-pointers on three straight possessions to build a 16 point lead for West.

“When I hit a couple of them I want to keep going,” said Hoye, who finished with five threes. “I was feeling pretty good.”

The Spartans (14-5, 4-2) were unable to get back into the game, but ended the game on a 7-0 run to make the final score closer. Gracie Sanchez had a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds, but struggled to match Collins inside. Collins said she was looking forward to matching up with North’s Grand Valley State recruit.

“When I play tough competition it makes me better so I like playing tougher competition and I knew I had to do my best against her,” Collins said.

GBN guard Rachel Blitt (7 points) struggled with foul trouble throughout the game and fouled out with 4:37 left. Junior point guard Rachel Dress missed the game after suffering a concussion in a 46-29 win over Deerfield on Tuesday.

The Spartans entered the game on a seven-game winning streak that included a 5-0 record at St. Viator’s Snowflake Tournament en route to the tournament title. The Warriors were following up on a seventh place showing at the prestigious Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown that coach Derril Kipp said gave the team confidence.

Maine West now sits a half game up on the Spartans and Niles North, which is 3-1 in league play.

“This was a huge game,” Hoye said. “I know Coach Kipp made sure we knew that.”

Maine West junior Ashley Collins had five points and seven rebounds. Bridget Burger scored four points and pulled down rebounds while in the starting lineup for the injured Megan John.

“What we went through the first part of the season, especially in our Thanksgiving tournament, was that if Amanda didn’t score and Brittany didn’t score we were in trouble, but when both of them scored and nobody else did we were still in trouble,” Kipp said. “Now we have some other people who are starting to play with some confidence.”

The Warriors will try to defend the newly gained conference lead next Friday against Highland Park. North hosts Maine East the same day.
