New Football Coaches Named for BGHS, WHS

New coaches will begin work in June.

Both and high schools will have new head football coaches next season.

Michael DiMatteo, former head coach at Hinsdale Central High School and most recently, assistant coach at Glenbard West High School, has accepted the position at Buffalo Grove. Brent Pearlman, former head coach at Prospect High School and, most recently, offensive coordinator at Lake Zurich High School, will lead the Wheeling Wildstang team. Both have extensive head coaching experience and will assume their new positions in June when summer football camp begins. DiMatteo will succeed Jim Farrell, and Pearlman will replace Dave Dunbar who retires in June.

A 2010 Golden Apple Teacher of Distinction, DiMatteo, also has extensive experience teaching AP European History and AP Government. Pending approval by the Township High School District 214 school board, he also will join Buffalo Grove's social studies/world languages department.

"Our athletic administration is very excited that Coach DiMatteo will become our next head football coach," said BGHS assistant principal for student activities Mark Schaetzlein. "His leadership and experience will best serve the needs of our students and athletes. He has demonstrated that he has the skills to maximize the potential of our football players in order to attain the highest of successes both on and off the field."

As Lake Zurich's head coach from 2000 to 2006, DiMatteo took his program from a record of 3-24 to an IHSA Class 7A semi-finalist his third year. In 2006 he became the head coach of the Hinsdale Central program where he led the team to five state playoffs in six years and a second place finish in the 2008 IHSA 8A State Championship series. His overall record is 71-45.

Pearlman has a long and successful coaching and teaching career in District 214. He led Prospect High School's football program for 12 years after taking it over with a decade record of 11-70. Under his leadership, the Prospect Knights won three Class 7A IHSA State Championships. Pearlman also guided the team to two state semi-finalists and 10 state playoffs. His overall record is 104-34.

"We are excited to be able to welcome to Wheeling High School a coach with Brent's level of experience and proven record of success," said Wheeling Principal Laz Lopez. "We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our students and football program."
