The Cherry Blossom Centennial: 100 Years of Flowering
Each spring, thousands of people plan a visit to see the flowering cherry trees that surround the Tidal Basin in Washington D.C. The trees were a gift to the people of the United States from the people of Japan in 1912.
In this slide lecture, art historian Jeff Mishur will discuss the events that prompted the gift, the impact of anti-Japanese sentiment during World War II, and the story of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
