District 63 Board Meeting: Students Read Their Way To The Top

Students at Stevenson School showed off their reading prowess at the Board of Education's monthly meeting Wednesday.

Students gave a glimpse of their reading wizardry at Stevenson School on Wednesday.

Stevenson fourth- and fifth-graders competed earlier this month at a Battle of the Books competition at Niles Public Library, where teams of four listened to a quote from a book and tried to name the title (for five points) and author (for one point). They trounced the competition by racking up 828 points before taking their talents across the district to face other teams at Morton Grove Public Library. There, they scored more than 200 points to claim the championship.

Parents and administrators watched attentively as the winning teams practiced in front of them at East Maine School District 63's monthly meeting Wednesday.

"We are so proud of your kids," said Susan Lempke, youth services supervisor for Niles Public Library. "They did an amazing job. Sixty books is an astonishing amount. They are very impressive and determined."
