Crash Demonstration Warns About Drunk Driving

Operation Prom presents dangers of drunk driving at Maine West.

An enactment of a crash scene intended to show students the potentially deadly consequences of drinking and driving took place at Maine West High School Friday. Operation Prom was a cooperative effort among school officials and students, the fire department, the police department and several presenters with firsthand accounts of losing friends and loved ones.

The demonstration has been given every other year since 1991, making this year’s Operation Prom the eleventh one since its inception. Four student actors with major roles and 15 student actors playing mourners enacted the scene alongside fire fighters and police officers for a crowd of about 1,100 juniors and seniors in the high school’s football stadium.

The graphic scene elicited a variety of reactions from the crowd, including spontaneous howls, concerned looks and sadness. The crash demonstration was followed by four presentations in the auditorium. A grave stone salesperson, victims advocate, police officer and a former student involved in a crash spoke to students about the consequences of drunk driving.
