Tour De Des Plaines Gears Up for 2nd Spin

Mayor Martin "Marty" Moylan's casual rides turn into a bike convoy as part of Fall Fest fun.

Des Plaines Gears Up For Second Annual Tour De Des Plaines

Residents who spend time outdoors during the day might catch a glimpse of Mayor Marty Moylan riding his bike through the streets of Des Plaines.

"If you ride in your car, you miss a lot," said Moylan.

He says his bike rides offer him the opportunity to see what streets and sidewalks need repair. It also has enabled him to stay in shape and stay in touch with residents.

Moylan credits residents who would often join him in sparking the idea for the Tour De Des Plaines -- marking its second year as it coincides with the Fall Fest on Sept. 17 to 19.

The community ride, scheduled for Sept. 18, draws residents together and even other officials, the mayor said.

Police officer Colin Johnson participated in last year's ride and said he enjoyed engaging with residents in a different setting. "The police are often times only showing up when bad things happen," he said.

Johnson said the bike-along allows him to get to know more members of the community. "It's a great way for people to come out and meet one another," he added.

Last year, about 80 cyclists participated in the ride, and the city's director of media services, Karen Kozenczak, expects the number to double.

The bike ride winds through the eight wards of Des Plaines with designated rests stops in each.

"It's a nice way to get out and see the city," said Kozenczak.

There is no charge to participate in the 12.5-mile bike ride, but all riders are required to wear a helmet. Registration starts at 8 a.m. Sept. 18 at the Lake Park Clubhouse.

Afterward bicyclists can enjoy the Fall Fest activities of vendors, carnival rides and bands along Lee Street, between Touhy and Howard avenues.
