Report: $400 Million Flood Mitigation Plan Proposed for Des Plaines River

The U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers is proposing more than $400 million in flood control measures along the Des Plaines River, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The improvements would be built over a 20 year period and include new levees and flood walls in Des Plaines, River Grove, Riverside and in the Schiller Park-Franklin Park area.

WGN reported that the plan also would restore about 11,000 acres of wetlands to help mitigate flooding. The TV station also reported that although Illinois officials welcomed the plan, they expressed concerns over how it would be paid for.

In April, Des Plaines and much of the Chicago area endured flooding after heavy rains.
