Public Safety Committee Meeting Tonight

Alderman Mark Walsten (6th Ward) will be addressing Fire Department overtime and banning coal tar sealant in driveways.

Alderman Mark Walsten (6th Ward), chairman of the Public Safety Committee, has called for a meeting this evening, Feb. 24, at City Hall to discuss Fire Department overtime and the banning of coal tar sealant in driveways and parking lots in Des Plaines.

The issues being addressed concerning overtime are a follow-up from a Jan. 5 meeting. Fire Chief Alan Wax has supplied the committe with information requested from that meeting that will be discussed this evening.

Discussions will begin concerning whether the city should ban coal tar sealants used to protect asphalt because they are made of a chemical compound know as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which the U.S. Health Department says may cause cancer. Other cities have banned the use of the sealants.
