Mulligan Leaves Field Wide Open for Moylan — Almost

Two Republican write-in candidates in the race.

After 20 years and 10 terms, State Rep. Rosemary Mulligan announced yesterday she will not seek re-election in November, according to a statement released last night.

“I’ve talked through this with my family and friends, and I’ve decided not to seek re-election after all,” wrote Mulligan.  “I want to be around more for my family.”

The announcement came after a Des Plaines resident challenged Mulligan’s petition signatures earlier this month, and would not appear on the primary ballot, Journal & Topics Newspapers reported.

Mulligan was one of three Republican write-in candidates, according to her spokesperson Vicki Crawford. Kelly Schaefer and Susan Sweeney, both of Park Ridge, were the other two.

Schaefer ran in order to put “a little heat” on Rep. Mulligan, Journal and Topics Newspapers reported.

In a statement Sweeney released on Jan. 19, she wrote, "I want to bring the common-sense experiences we all share of balancing a budget, paying the bills and preparing for the future to a state that has clearly forgotten those fundamentals.”

Mulligan said that in her retirement she plans to keep involved locally.

“I don’t plan on backing any candidate to replace me,” Mulligan wrote. “However, in my retirement I hope to continue to serve the area as counsel on legislative representation to help keep the district moving forward.”
