Illinois Budget Cuts Will Cost Seniors and Disabled

Gov. Pat Quinn's proposed budget cuts will eliminate Circuit Breaker program and Illinois Cares Rx.

Two programs that aid seniors and the disabled with property tax grants and discounted prescriptions are in danger of being cut as a part of Gov. Pat Quinn's proposed budget cuts for 2012, according to FOXillinois.com.

Quinn's plan would call for the elimination of the Circuit Breaker program, which is said to cost the state $24.2 million and Illinois Cares Rx, which costs $107 million.

Julie Hamos, director of Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, stressed the need to control spending, stating that seniors account for 17 percent of total spending, and the disabled account for 37 percent of total spending through the Medicaid program.
