Get Out: Naper Settlement, Frightfest, Indoor Triathlon, More

Great America Frightfest Trip

When/Where: Friday, Oct. 12, 4 p.m. to midnight at the Administrative & Leisure Center, 2222 Birch St. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Join us for the annual Frightfest Halloween Event at Six Flags Great America. Fee includes transportation and supervision. Bring money to buy dinner, drinks, and snacks. Kids will be on their own in the park; staff will be at designated check-in locations during specific times throughout the night. Trip departs from and returns to the Leisure Center. Be sure to register at least 48 hours in advance.

Pricing: Residents $15, Non-resident $18 with own admission ticket or season pass. Residents $60, Non-residents $70 includes an admission ticket.

Friday Night Films

When/Where: Friday, Oct. 12, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: A free screening of the independent film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Seating is limited and on a first come, first seated basis.

Big Noise Theatre presents "Jesus Christ Superstar"

When/Where: Weekends through Oct. 21 at Big Noise Theatre at Prairie Lakes, 515 E. Thacker St. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Based on a concept album project written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the final seven days in the life of Jesus Christ through the troubled eyes of Judas Iscariot. The show is a musical theater staple, having just been revived recently on Broadway.

Pricing: Tickets for adults, $25, seniors $23, students with school ID and children 12 years old and younger $16.

Historic Adventures: Visit to Naper Settlement

When/Where: Saturday, Oct. 13, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson St., Des Plaines.

Why Go: Enjoy a daylong getaway as part of the History Center’s Historic Adventures program series. Experience the past while touring this 12-acre outdoor museum. 

This Historic Adventure will be an opportunity for individuals and families to welcome and celebrate the autumn harvest at the Naper Settlement. Along with touring the buildings and grounds, adults and children will learn about grinding corn, root cellars, food preservation, and canning. Making a corn-husk doll and taking a turn at the cider press, and sampling the sweet taste of apples will also be available. There will also be an opportunity for participants to share lunch in downtown Naperville and explore nearby shops and the Riverwalk. Meet at History Center; transportation to Naperville, IL, will take place by carpool.

Pricing: Adults $20, Adults who are history center members $18, children ages 4-12 $10, children with a history center member $9.

Lattof YMCA Indoor Triathlon

When/Where: Sunday, Oct. 14, 8 a.m. to noon at Lattof YMCA, 300 E. Northwest Highway in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Join the Lattof YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago in a series of Indoor Triathlons. During the triathlon you will complete as many laps as you can swim in 10 minutes, as many miles you can bike in 10 minutes and run in 10 minutes.

We will utilize stationary bikes and treadmills in the Wellness Center for the bike and run, and for the swim in the pool you can use any stroke you choose.

Your distances will be weighted in all three events and prizes will be awarded to top 3 males and top 3
females. Must be at least 12 years of age to participate.

Pricing: $30.

Art Guild 10 Group Show & Reception

When/Where:, A reception and one-day sale will take place Sunday, Oct. 14, 1-4 p.m., exhibition open through Oct. 19 at Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson St. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: The Des Plaines Art Guild and the Des Plaines History Center present Art Guild 10, an exhibition of 10 artists. Artists present two framed original works plus eight unframed additional works. 

All visitors may vote for their favorite artists' work to win the People’s Choice Award Ribbon by purchasing a $1 raffle ticket. Raffle prizes include gift certificates from local sponsors.

Proceeds benefit the Des Plaines Art Guild and the Des Plaines History Center. For more information, contact the Des Plaines History Center.

Candlelight Yoga

When/Where: Sunday, Oct. 14, 6-7 p.m. at Twisted Tree Yoga Studio, 1403 E. Prairie Ave. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Restorative and candlelight yoga focuses on re-energizing the body with gentle and supported poses to open up. Poses are held longer with emphasis on bringing the body back into balance. 

Pricing: $15.

Sicilian Grape Stomping Festival at Monastero's Ristorante

When/Where: Friday, Oct. 12, 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at 3935 W. Devon Ave. in Chicago.

Why Go: Join Monastero Ristorante for their 43rd Annual Sicilian Wine-Stomping Festival, where four young ladies will jump in half-barrels of grapes and competing to extract a liter of juice. 

The lucky winner will earn the title, 
Queen of the Festival!

This special evening will be held in restaurant’s Garden Room and will feature a Sicilian four-course dinner, Italian wines, dancing, singing and entertainment for all.

Pricing: $50.

Making A Better Tomorrow Sale

When/Where: Saturday, Oct. 13, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Andrews Lutheran Church & School, 260 N. Northwest Highway in Park Ridge.

Why Go: A Reducing, Reusing and Recycling sale to help the environment and raise funds for our middle school overnight class trips. If there is inclement weather, the sale will be held indoors, enter off of Elm Street.

Pricing: Free.

Oktoberfest! Oompah Music & German Dinner and Beer

When/Where: Saturday, Oct. 13, 5-9 p.m. at Park Ridge Presbyterian Church, 1300 W. Crescent Ave. in Park Ridge

Why Go: This German Festival will offer fun for all ages and feature entertainment by the Joe DeLuca "Oompah Duo" and Schuplatter-Verein "Edelweiss" Dancers.

Back by popular demand for the kids will be "Parky" the balloon man - a past entertainer of our church functions. Participants will enjoy a taste of Germany with an authentic German style dinner and German and American beer served throughout the evening.

Pricing: Adults $25, ages 13-18 $15, 12 years old and younger $10.

Park Ridge Farmers' Market

When/Where: Saturday, Oct. 13, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Prairie Avenue and Garden Street in Park Ridge.

Why Go: The Park Ridge Farmers' Market features fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, handmade soaps, flowers, potted plants and more.
