Des Plaines Shoots Down Plan to Turn Grazie Property Into A Church

Grazie! Ristorante & Banquets, 1050 E. Oakton Street, has been closed for about a year.

A plan to turn the former Grazie! Ristorante & Banquets property into a worship center was effectively rejected by the Des Plaines City Council Monday.

The Hanuman Spiritual and Community Center planned to buy the property at 1050 E. Oakton Street, but several alderman voiced concerns about whether the location was the right place for the center.

First Ward Alderman Patricia Haugeberg noted that the city's comprehensive plan called for a commercial use on the nearly 4 acre property.

Third Ward Alderman Matthew Bogusz said that Des Plaines values diversity as "an essential part of our community." But he also said that the center's plans for the property were not congruent with the city's vision for the area.

Although Bogusz motioned to deny the plan, he was advised by the city attorney that his motion should instruct city staff to draft a written resolution rejecting the plan that could be voted on at the next meeting. Bogusz changed his motion to instruct staff to draft a resolution rejecting the plan.

Bogusz' motion was approved unanimously.

Churches bring a plethora of people and businesses who wish to relocate near their place of worship. Churches are very commercial, with restaurants and stores in them, bringing the city tax revenue. It would be a lost opportunity if not given careful consideration. There are too many empty buildings. Perhaps it would breathe new life into this town.
