Des Plaines Journal Endorses Moylan; Chicago Tribune Backs Sweeney

Candidates for the Illinois 55th State House District, Democrat Marty Moylan and Republican Susan Sweeney, have both received endorsements from newspapers and other organizations. The newly-drawn district includes portions of Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village, Park Ridge and Rosemont.

Journal and Topics Newspapers announced its endorsement of Moylan, currently mayor of Des Plaines, on Sunday. During his time as mayor, Moylan reduced the number of city administrators, required city staff to be more accommodating to the public and kept the city’s tax levy for the general fund at zero percent, Journal and Topics Newspapers stated.

Moylan was also endorsed by the Daily Herald, which stated his experience as first alderman, then as mayor, would be a benefit to the district.

The would-be incumbent for the district, , in part, because he is pro-choice on the issue of abortion.

Susan Sweeney, a substitute teacher, client manager and community activist from Park Ridge, received an endorsement from the Chicago Tribune. The tribune stated it had more confidence in Sweeney to advocate for pension reform and to be fiscally disciplined.

Sweeney also received endorsements from the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, STAND for Children Illinois, the National Federation of Independent Business Save America’s Free Enterprise Trust, the Illinois Bankers Association the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the Illinois Manufacturers Association, according to her campaign’s website. STAND for Children Illinois stated Sweeney was committed to improving education for all children.

Moylan and Sweeney participated in a political debate in which they discussed a range of issues including the state’s unfunded pension liability, the state budget, Illinois’ reputation for corruption and more at Des Plaines City Hall on Oct. 24. Local cable channel 17 is airing the debate multiple times, and it may also be seen on YouTube.
