Commercial Parking Garages Now Permitted on Des Plaines’ South Side

City Staff say garage will target O'Hare airport users.

Des Plaines Aldermen unanimously approved a text amendment change that will allow for commercial parking garages in certain zones where they previously weren’t permitted at Monday night’s city council meeting.

City staff recommended the change after Des Plaines entered a redevelopment agreement in February. , LLC for $1.1 million. The city purchased that land about eight years ago for $10.5 million.

A hotel, parking garage, and restaurant will be built on the northeast corner of Mannheim and Higgins Roads.

While the timeline isn’t exact, the developer will begin accepting contract bids for the project “very shortly,” said Michael Bartholomew, director of community and economic development.

The proposed garage will hold approximately 2,300 cars, Bartholomew said.

The parking garage will have a “spin-off benefit” for the people of Des Plaines by bringing new people through the city and giving business to local companies. The city will also receive revenue from the parking and hotel taxes generated by the project, Bartholomew said.
