Wednesday Blotter: Girls Report Suspicious Driver; Lead Pipe Brandished

Driver arrested on warrant and his passenger is busted on drug charge in traffic violation stop.

The following items are taken from the Des Plaines Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Lead pipe shown in threat

April 23: A pedestrian reported while he waited at a stop sign in the 300 block of Hawthorne Lane a vehicle with a male driver and two male passengers sped by and blew the stop sign. When the man shouted at the driver to slow down, the vehicle stopped. The man told police he saw the driver get out and walk toward him carrying a lead pipe and shouting obscenities. As people come out of their homes to check the commotion, the driver returned to the vehicle and fled the scene.

Burglary

April 22: Police responded to a report of residential burglary in the 2700 block of South Craig Drive. The resident reported that a laptop, watch, Sony Playstation and wedding band were among the items taken.

April 25: A woman reported that her apartment in the 500 block of Seegers Road had been broken into while she was out of town. Items reported stolen included a Toshiba laptop, jewelry and other items.

2 charged after fight at home

April 23: Police responded to a residence about a fight in the 1300 block of East Fargo Avenue. Several witnesses said that three men came to the home uninvited and started a fight. Police found the three offenders and took them into custody.

While investigating the situation, police discovered that two of the offenders were younger than 21 and the other offender purchased alcohol for them.

Eliseo Mercado, 25, of the 2000 block of South Pine Street, was charged with contributing to delinquency of a minor, mob action, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Javier Vazquez, 20, also of the 2000 block of South Pine Street, was charged with illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor and mob action.

The other offender is under the age of 18 and his charges are pending, according to the report.

Criminal damage to property

April 22: Black spray paint was used to write graffiti on a building and shipping container in the 300 block of Howard Avenue. Several letter combinations and cartoon faces were painted.

April 22: Police reported graffiti was written in the men's restroom at the train depot, 1501 Miner St. 

Vehicle vandalized

April 23: A man reported that several small chips and dents were made to the windshield and hood of his vehicle, which was vandalized while it was parked in the 2000 block of South Pine Street. 

Traffic stop is double bust

April 22: Police pulled over a vehicle in the 1100 block of Thacker Street after the driver jumped the curb while he made a turn. The driver, whose name was not listed in the report, was taken into custody because of a warrant for his arrest.

His passenger, Jacqueline Maccartie-Brice, 25, of the 1000 block of Oakwood Avenue, was charged with possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia after police found a bag of cannabis and three smoking pipes in her purse.

Train station disturbance

April 22: Police went to the train depot, 1501 Miner St., in response to a disturbance call. When they arrived, police found Lawrence Diestleow, 59, of the 22000 block of North Prairie Road in Prairieview, to be highly intoxicated. He was in possession of two bottles of alcohol and was slouching on a bench.

When police approached Diestelow, he became hostile and shouted obscenities. As police attempted an arrest, Diestelow turned around and scraped his face on the bench, opening a previous wound. Police called the fire department and Diestelow was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for treatment. 

Suspicious incident

April 24: Two young girls reported that they were being followed by a man in a black four-door vehicle while they walked to a park in the 600 block of Wolf Road. They were able to give police a partial license plate number. Police observed a similar vehicle in the area with matching plates and questioned the driver, who admitted that he had been in the area but said he was driving around the park to see if anyone was playing basketball.

Theft

April 21: A man reported that a backpack blower, valued at $350, was stolen from his trailer while he was doing landscaping work in the 900 block of East Touhy Avenue.

April 23: A woman reported that her green fanny pack, containing her car keys, credit cards and driver's license, was stolen. She said she had placed it on a restroom sink and forgot. When she returned to the restroom at a grocery store at 727 W. Golf Rd., the pack was gone.

April 24: A man reported that his son's mountain bike was stolen from an unlocked storage space at their residence in the 1600 block of Oakwood Avenue.

April 25: A woman reported the windshield wiper blades were removed from her vehicle while it was parked in a lot in the 1400 block of East Prairie Avenue.
