Wednesday Blotter: 2 Vehicles Burglarized at Day Camp

Driver confronts man rummaging through back of truck parked in driveway, police report.

The Des Plaines Police Department provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Vehicle Burglary

Police responded Aug. 12 to a report of auto burglary in the 1400 block of East Touhy Avenue. The owner told police his son dropped off a van on Aug. 9. Three days later, the passenger's window was found smashed.

Police reported that two other nearby vehicles also had smashed windows. It appeared the van had been ransacked, and wires were hanging out beneath the steering columns in the other two vehicles, one of which was missing a bag of clothes and a tire jack.

Police responded Aug. 11 to a reported burglary at Cardinal Fitness in the 1500 block of South Lee Street. Police reported that the rear passenger door window was smashed. The driver told police that her Coach purse with her identifications, credit card and cash were taken from under the front seat.

Vehicle Burglary

Police responded Aug. 11 to an auto burglary report in the 600 block of South Wolf Road. According to the police report, the driver said she was dropping her child off at West Park's day camp and went inside the building for about two minutes. She returned to find the driver's side front window was broken and her purse, containing a wallet, identification, credit cards and less than $20, was missing.

Another driver told police that she left her car unlocked at the day camp in the same parking lot at about the same time. She too returned to her auto to discover her purse missing, along with her wallet, identification, credit cards and $20.

Both drivers told police they saw a white, newer model full-size sedan drive at a high rate of speed northbound on Wolf Road from westbound Greenview Avenue.

Trespass to Vehicle

Police were dispatched Aug. 5 to investigate a theft report in the 1800 block of South Sycamore Street. According to the report, a driver told police he pulled his work truck into his driveway and went inside the residence for about 15 minutes. When he returned, he saw a man standing at the back of his van with the rear door opened and rummaging around.

Nearby, another driver waited in a van parked in the driveway. When confronted, the man said he thought it was his friend's truck and quickly got into the passenger side of the blue Dodge van that fled the area.

The vehicle operator told police nothing appeared to be missing from the truck, as most of the equipment inside was bolted down. 

Motor Vehicle Burglary

Police were dispatched Aug. 2 for a malicious mischief report in the 1000 block of East Forest Avenue. According to the report, a woman told police eggs were thrown at her son's vehicle over the weekend. The resident also reported that her daughter's car was found unlocked and a GPS device was removed.

Vehicle Burglary

Police were dispatched Aug. 2 to investigate a theft report in the 1900 block in Illinois Street. According to the report, a Pioneer dashboard stereo, valued at $100, was taken from a vehicle between 8:30 p.m. Aug. 1 and 6:25 a.m. Aug. 2.
