Alleged gunman is 16-year-old rival gang member, police say.

The person allegedly responsible for the death of Eliseo Mercado, 26, has been identified as a 16-year-old Des Plaines resident and rival gang member, according to a news release from Des Plaines Police Chief Jim Prandini.

Earlier:

Mercado, of the 200 block of Pine Street, died Saturday morning at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge after he was shot multiple times during a disturbance hours earlier in the parking lot of a town home complex at Pine Court and Everett Avenue.

Investigators from the Des Plaines Police Department and Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT) determined that Mercado and two other gang members drove to the complex and began arguing with three rival gang members. One of the rival members, identified as the 16-year-old suspect, pulled out a handgun and shot Mercado in the chest. Police said the gunman also fired at one of Mercado's companions, but missed.

The Cook County State's Attorney’s Office plans to issue a juvenile petition in regards to charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a gang member, according to Tuesday's news release.
