Tuesday Blotter: $14,700 in Valuables Taken in 2 Burglaries
In both incidents, entry was made by breaking a basement window to steal items.
The Des Plaines Police Department provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Burglary
Aug. 25: The owners of a house in the 1400 block of Sixth Avenue returned around 6 p.m. to find their place ransacked. Police reported that entry was gained by breaking a basement window. A Toshiba laptop valued at $700, a black HP 23-inch flat-screen monitor valued at $300 and gold jewelry valued at $2,500 were missing.

Vehicle burglary

Aug. 25: A woman walked to her car that was parked in a lot in the 2200 block of Devon Avenue to find several items missing around 4:30 p.m. The glove box and the center console was rifled and a Garmin GPS device valued at $215, a Von Mar gift card for $250 and about $15 in loose change were taken. The woman said she thought she had locked the vehicle as there was no signs of forced entry.
Theft
Aug. 25: A man discovered his green and gray mountain bike had been taken from a light pole where it was locked in a parking lot in the 700 block of Graceland Avenue. Both the bike, valued at $200, and the lock were gone.
Retail Theft
Aug. 25: Police arrested Wojciech Sokol, 23, of Des Plaines, after he walked into the Jewel-Osco at 819 S. Elmhurst Rd. and walked out with a bottle of Camarena tequila hidden valued at $21.79 under his shirt. He was caught on surveillance video. Sokol's court date is Oct. 5.
Burglary
Aug. 27: Residents of a house in the 600 block of Devonshire Drive discovered that items were out of place in their home and that their closets and dressers were rummaged. They further discovered that $1,000 had been taken from a checkbook box in a dresser drawer along with $10,000 in jewelry. Police reported that entry was gained by breaking a basement window.
Jeep break-in
Aug. 27: A tan 1995 Jeep Wrangler was burglarized while it was parked in a driveway in the 1000 block of Irwin Avenue. A voltmeter valued at $150 and sunglasses valued at $60 were taken.
Burglary to a vehicle
Aug. 27: An unlocked maroon 2001 Dodge Intrepid, parked in a driveway in the 900 block of Sixth Avenue, had the faceplate, valued at $150, of an Alpine CD player stolen.
Van break-in
Aug. 28: A woman discovered that the rear driver's side window of her black 2007 Honda Odyssey had been broken while the vehicle was parked in the 2000 block of Miner Street. A Cole Haan purse valued at $500, a Canon PowerShot camera valued at $350, an iPod Nano valued at $100, a LG Envy cell phone valued at $200, a Curve cell phone valued at $200 and a set of keys were reported missing.
Damaged van
Aug. 27: A driver arrived at her silver 2004 Ford minivan to find a brick in the front seat, apparently thrown through the window. The damage was estimated at $400.
