Thursday Blotter: DUI, Possession of Cannabis, Retail Theft

Police retrieve bottle of alcohol from backseat, driver charged with DUI.

The following items are taken from the Des Plaines Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

DUI/ Minor consumption of alcohol

June 4: Police pulled a man over for a traffic offense on the 1200 block of South Lee Street. Police said they smelled alcohol coming from the vehicle and retrieved a bottle of Hennessy cognac from the back seat. Joshua Michalski, 21, of the 1800 block of Fargo Avenue was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Two passengers in the vehicle, Nora Moore, 19, of the 500 block of East Webford Avenue and Javier Vasquez, 20, of the 2000 block of South Pine Street, were both charged with minor consumption of alcohol.

Minor consumption of alcohol

June 6: Police responded to a call about a fight on the 1300 block of Prospect Avenue. There they observed a man yelling at an unknown subject. When they approached the man he took off running, according to a report. Jimmy Nelson Montesinos, 18, of the 1300 block of East Prospect Avenue was charged with minor consumption of alcohol and resisting a peace officer.

Possession of cannabis

June 2: Police observed two men sitting in a vehicle parked on the 800 block of East Hollywood Avenue. When they approached the men, police said they smelled the odor of cannabis. Both men admitted that there was "weed" in the vehicle and the passenger admitted that it was his, according to a police report. Cory Trost, 25, of the 800 block of East North Avenue was charged with possession of cannabis. 

Retail theft

June 3: Joseph Szanati, 18, of the 800 block of Walter Avenue and Fermin Carrasco, 18, of the 1000 block of Woodlawn Avenue, were both charged with retail theft after they each attempted to exit the Dominick's at 1555 S Lee St. with bottles of alcohol they did not pay for, according to a police report.

Theft

June 5: A woman reported that a charcoal grill was stolen from the back porch of her residence on the 1800 block of Maple Street.

June 6: A man reported that a bicycle was stolen from the driveway of his home on the 1900 block of Webster Lane.

Unlawful sale of tobacco to minor

May 27:  Anthony J. Thompson, 18, of the 1100 block of Seymour Avenue was charged with unlawful sale of tobacco to a minor after he sold cigarettes to a 16-year-old girl during a tobacco compliance check at the Jewel Express, 827 South Elmhurst Road.
